It's Jewish New Year and we're at [livejournal.com profile] ruthi and [livejournal.com profile] oscarhocklee's place, eating ceremonial apples and honey and drinking copious earthly beer. I have had smoked beer (Rauchbier), cherry beer, Honeydew, Rochefort 10 and Fraoch heather beer. Liz survived De Koninck, her first beer in a week. Arkady had the Fraoch and Rochefort 10. Shana tovah!

Today has been frantic in its way. Neo is shitting copiously, having crapped on Liz's T-shirt and in a plastic bag in the spare room. He gets full points for actually crapping in a plastic bag. I've been carefully rationing his meat so he doesn't pig out.

Cookie's laptop is a 17" Vaio. It's a desktop replacement, i.e., you could put four legs on it and use it as a desk. 1920×1200, running Breezy beta. We tried putting my coat on him; it was comically small and has no hope of ever crossing his chest. I'm still keen to try it on Ingvar, Landmine and Lars.

I think I shall fall over very happily in a short while. Yes.

Being just a young kitterling, I'd chalk it up to no litter training.. or not much yet anyways... keep putting him in the box after meals... scratch his paws in it... if he continues to poop everywhere but the box, he may need a visit to the vet... might be a bowel obstruction or something... kittens are wont to eat stupid things.

Scrub EVERYTHING he's crapped on with an enzymatic cleanser/odor neutralizer otherwise he'll continue to crap there cos "well, that's where I went before... so..."

Kittens... so cute, yet so dumb...

seconded. i would also consider keeping him confined to one room at night, or when you can't keep an eye on him, with very little stuff in it aside from a litter tray.

also, what kind of litter are you using? i've had cats reject the pelleted paper and wood ones, but never a fine-grained clay litter. and i've had kittens absolutely refuse scented litter.

i'd switch litter. seriously. i know *far* too many cats who will only use the pelleted stuff *sometimes*. it feels wrong, particularly to tiny kittens - the pellets are big and hard and nasty on little wee paws, and don't dig well (they roll back in). even my Spot, at about 15 and clearly house trained (and not yet having senior problems), used to shit in the bath (and on the plastic bags in the cupboard, weirdly) every few days when i tried the paper pellet litter. and most of the folks i knew who used it admitted that they used a more traditional litter when litter training kittens.

if he's going *on* things, he's probably looking for a good feel for digging, rather than just going where he's standing.

you might also consider a temporary second tray somewhere in the flat for if he is getting caught short. as he gets bigger he'll be able to hold it longer, and you'll be able to gradually move the second tray towards the permanent one, then remove it.

Which reminds me: vets generally agree: 1 tray per cat PLUS one. so two cats = 3 trays

Well, before he left, he was pretty good at using the litter box. There were the occasional incident, but by and far, he used one of the litter boxes when he needed to go.

[livejournal.com profile] reddragdiva, you are using a clumping cat litter, aren't you? He really does *not* like other cat litters.

Yeah, we had a smaller litter-box with wood pellets, they liked sniffing that litterbox, but went on the other ones, even when it required more difficult climbing. Should've thought to mention that. :(

Clumping litter can kill kittens, and isn't good for adult cats. The dust is breathed in, and the litter ingested through grooming, and it swells and clumps inside the cat or kitten.

really? Are you sure? Reports? Dropped cat litter in a puddle last year... stayed pretty much a goo until spring... no worse than ingesting dirt/clay inthe garden... if they're eating it byt he mouthful, I could see your point of view, but otherwise, I'm pretty certain that that can be chalked up to "urban legend"

Mmmmm, Fraoch! You really should try the Grozet (gooseberry beer) or Ebulum (elderberry beer) from the same brewery (http://www.fraoch.com/historicales.htm).

My mum always used to give cats a raw egg when they had the shits, and it worked, but give him half an egg because he's only little. Use the other half for half a batch of cookies or something.
