I appear to have the beginnings of [livejournal.com profile] arkady's cold, which she caught from her co-worker who just came back from holidays in New York. OMGWTFBBQ OH NOES MERKIN FLU!1!!! I slept most of the way in on the Tube (we have the Norn Line back, thankfully) and have been sitting here staring into space and guzzling lemonade. If I feel like this tomorrow I'll be taking the day off, buckets of gold or no.

I didn't mention: on Friday, [livejournal.com profile] daneel_olivaw gave me his dead Canon Digital Ixus v2 (the CompactFlash model) — the one I recommended to him a couple of years ago ;-) It's fully functional except there's no output from the CCD. Could be anything. I may well try to find another dead Ixus on eBay to build a Frankencamera. You can get twenty to thirty quid for a dead digital camera.

Of course, this requires getting around to it. I still haven't even attempted to do anything to my dead MP3 camera. And there's a PCI wifi card still sitting on my PC waiting for me to install it and see if it works under FreeBSD.

Monday night I tried a dist-upgrade to turn Ubuntu 5.04 on my laptop to 5.10. It lost power half way through, but starting the command again seemed to proceed okay. However, on boot, neither X nor the network would start. I could have faffed around with it, but decided "fuck it" and reinstalled afresh. Tonight I'll run through my page and see how much of it I still need for Breezy.

this (http://www.canon-asia.com/index.jsp?fuseaction=image-phenomena_notice) was mentioned on Slashdot a week or two back; there is a known problem with some species of CCDs used in Ixuses (Ixii? whatever) along with some other manufacturers' brands. Might be worth checking that out because apparently they're being replaced no matter if they're out of warranty or not.

That description definitely rings bells, and the model is one of the ones listed as being affected. Not sure how much additional paperwork I have at this point, but I can probably track down date-of-purchase and the like if we need to convince them that you're the Genuine First Owner (TM).

Damn I'm anal. I have here the original invoice from InternetCamerasDirect dated 30/04/2003 (and the original manual, and a bunch of other junk you don't need). If you want to do a waranty claim against Canon UK then it looks like I have everything you'll need. I'm happy to sign things if you need me to, but obviously you'd have to do all the legwork since the camera is of little further interest to me.

Work is the h3llzor for the next fortnight, and Whitby's in the middle. You might need to co-ordinate with my gorgeous partner/housemate/drinking buddy.

My department bought a CCD camera on eBay - to go on the back of an electron microscope. Usually they cost thousands but this was £20 from a police auction of stolen things because they couldn't tell what it was. Turns out the CCD array was missing, but hey, £20 for a lot of spare parts is good :)

Yeah? What kind? We seem very keen on Hamamatsus. This is for fluorescence rather than electron microscopy, of course.

I'm still pondering the upgrade to Breezy, I seem to be having odd problems here and there which Breezy might resolve!

*Nods* I can imagine that was a bit of a bugger!

During a quiet period yesterday I read somewhere about the W32codecs not automatically supplied with Breezy. Not sure how I'll manage trying to sort that out.

I'd rather not have to do a complete reinstall - I've had enough of that with Hoary! ;-) I think trying to do the upgrade in a couple of hours in the evening after a day's work is probably not the best idea - so I might wait a while.

I guess you could add the new repositories in synaptic?

Though actually I doubt that would work because there's no dist-upgrade in there.

Then again, upgrading your distribution is something of a "power user" thing I suppose.

Synaptic's "smart upgrade" is basically dist-upgrade.

A cold from New York?
You may have the bug that just ran rampant through the Buffalo scene, as the vector for it here got it from someone who had just returned from NYC. (I actually mapped out infection chains one day, figuring out who gave it to who. Funny in a scary "oh my god, good thing this is just a cold!" way)

Enjoy it, I certanly did. My running total was 1 box day quil, 1 bottle nyquil, 2 bottles cough syrup, 2 boxes tissues, 1 bottle sore throat spray, 2 bags cough and vitamin C drops. Catch it quick with some zink, c, and echanacia and you may be better off than I was.

He's caught it from me, which means my immune system has pretty much beaten the stuffing out of it first. ;-)

I shouldn't be surprised, but I find it scary that someone on LJ has the username Daneel Olivaw.
