Epson Stylus Photo RX620 opinions wanted.

We've been searching reviews and we think the Epson Stylus Photo RX620 is what we want. It's an all-in-one (printer, scanner, negative scanner, fax!) six-colour photo printer and its output is reputedly beyoootiful. Reviews indicate the hardware is gorgeous but the Windows software is t3h suck. We would run it networked off the Mac (known to work fine with Tiger). Though it takes USB drives and most memory cards, so you don't even need a computer for many things!

The printer is £150 from Amazon, Epson cartridges are £10 each or £38 for the set of six, though there are generics as low as £12 the set. (And I know that with generics, you watch out for pigment-based inks that will kill your print head as opposed to the proper dye-based inks.)

Has anyone used this printer or something similar? Words of advice for young people?

(Q. Getting photos printed professionally works out about the same or even cheaper. A. Yes, but I'm a control addict.)

Epson R200 seems alright to me, though I haven't used mine for a while, just due to lack of reason.
Epson are the most supported in free OSes, as far as I know, being still the least fucked-up interface architecture and manufacturer.

I had (actually, still have) an original Epson Stylus Photo - which didn't require the chipped cartridges, and only stopped using it when I switched to the A3 Epson Photo 1270 (five-colour + black). Output on the latter is *wonderful* (though I so rarely actually print anything nowadays)

advice:

1) I'm told that all-in-one printers often break. We have two which have BOTH broken, but I think they are an earlier model of that one. However, just thought I'd give you a small warning.

2) advice for young people: do NOT have any kind of naughtyness before marriage, it is the cause of ALL the world's problems.

It's a good thing I'm happily married then! Though the Pope would still disapprove of a few things we do ...

That applies to almost all gadgets these days. They're priced to be semidisposable and most people want a new one in two years anyway. And it can be cheaper to buy a new printer than a new cartridge in some cases.

Indeed. Since it doesn't specify a language (e.g. PCL), I assume it doesn't speak one. But it looks remarkably self-sufficient, so at absolute worst I can dump rendered documents on a device that can look like a umass. But networking it off the Mac should be just fine.
