The printer is nice. It scans! (Expect more old Party Fears up some time.) It prints! The bundled software would suck on Windows, let alone on a Mac, but that's fine because we don't use it! It comes with a starter pack of high-quality photo paper and [livejournal.com profile] arkady nipped out and got a ream of plain A4, so we're good to go. Printer sharing on the Mac is pathetically easy and the Ubuntu laptop picked it up with no problems (in fact, our first printout was an Ubuntu colour test page). I like this new toy.

Mind you, you have to make sure your paper is in properly:

My first printout!

We reorganised [livejournal.com profile] redcountess' desk so that everything fits (Mac under desk, PC flat on desk, printer on PC where it fits exactly, monitor on other side, there's room on the desk and you can see out the spare room window now). Now all we need is an ADC to DVI adapter so we can run both computers to the same monitor.

[livejournal.com profile] arkady has been helping with the housework today. House inspection Tuesday morning! Yay.

Tomorrow is a Wikimedia UK meeting to start a charity. Royal Oak, 44 Tabard Street, Borough SE1 4JU. 12-2pm lunch, meet and chat, 2-6pm get stuff properly organised (once we're all a couple of pints down). Jimbo will be along.

I still need to think of how to get the laserjet back on the network since giving up with netbsd on the sparc lx... (it used to be on the dual p/pro but thats been moved downstairs)

As for ADC->DVI theres loads on ebay from £7.99 and up it seems from a quick search.

Yes, I'm keeping an eye on those, and a US seller has them for USD$25 or so BIN.

Can the Laserjet be connected to the G3?

Probably could be I suspect. I'd not thought about it tbh, possibly as I was trying to limit the load on it initially (as it was a 233).

I need to find a machine to hang the big old HP Scanjet 6100C off of too, but trying to find out if OS X supports it or not has proven less than helpful really.

The plan was kinda to use the old Sparc LX as it is the *ideal* size to sit under the printer and raise it to a height where it is reachable more easily, just getting samba/swat/cups set up on it with netbsd proved too much like hassle (and linux is a bit of a pain on older Sparcs from what I read at the time i thought about it all.

I kinda need to set up a media (mainly music) server so i can have a quiet dedicated machine to play music, etc, was thinking of a via mini-itx system and possibly thought ofshoving the laserjet off that too. Money dictates it ain't gonna happen though i think!

I'll see what the drivers/software for the laserjet 6l is like for Mac, thing I like about HP stuff being used under linux is, you avoid their sodding awful software! HP don't know how to write decent scanner or printer drivers or software at all is my experience really.

the 6l iirc isn't postscript, it is a cheapish nasty little thing, but cos it is cheap it is almost ideal ;)

As for the G3, it isn't a 233 anymore, I got a 400mhz G3 from the US and it works like a charm now that little machine :)

I'll investigate using OS X/beige as the print server machine.

Yeh, OS X is just about working again... too a lot of hassle really, but it works again...

I've been looking into scanner drivers for OS X, so might as well look for printer drivers too, lol!

Looking increasingly unlikely that I shall make it to sarf london due to (a) requirements to be elsewhere at same/adjacent times, and (b) Borough not being well-connected to the 'elsewhere' places by bus. If I don't appear please send my apologies, ta.

ps. b00bies?

I mentioned probability of absence on my own LJ a few days back (frankly, Sundays are the worst choice of day for such things ... saturdays would be far easier / preferable).

sfa JF is concerned, I sent him my thoughts pre-Whitby and he's never replied further. I don't think the draft on WM is sensible in quite a few ways (starting with the use of the word "Charity" in the MoA/AoA as there is, imho, a strong likelihood that at some point in the future we may need to change/tweak the structure and whilst a "company" can be a charity, a "charity" cannot be a company, for all that that entails. There are also some other major points, but I'm not wanting to attend another meeting like the one I attended today ...
