OH NOES!!!1!

I gave a moment's consideration to going through and doing a Great Lockdown, but I can't really be bothered. Everyone else in the world gets the whole truth in all its spectacular and messy glory. (Except the bits I don't tell you either.)

But tell me: how did or would you deal with your journal being discovered?

(I lock entries when I'm whining about w*rk or when I'm involved in putting together a surprise for someone. That's about it. And I must say, having the Church of Scientology reading one's every word online hoping to use it against one when one suffers a fear of not public speaking does produce interestingly defiant results. If I say so myself.)

Well mine is friends only, but if it were public and a work colleague found it I think I'd be a bit worried. If it were my Mum or my family (well my sister already is on LJ) I wouldn't mind as they all know I'm a little bit strange :)

Eh, my baby cousin found my journal. I just told him I expected him to filter anything he shared with teh rest of the family, and I'd do the same for him. Too late to lock it down, anyhow :>

i guess i wouldn't, really. I tend not to make Horribly Inciminating Posts, and if my old job ever discovered my commentary about the Coke-Addled Drunkard, the Very Illegal Things and all sundry events surrounding and got it into their heads to make pains of themselves, well.. i know where they hide all their evidence, and i have the phone numbers of the owner's parents. heh.

god forbid anyone else should find out i have a maudlin streak and like to knit. :o

"Huey, you're such a romantic."
"Don't tell anyone. It'd totally ruin my image."

I friends-only posts for two reasons: whining about Work Shit, or bi-/poly-/assfucking weirdness that'd freak the norms. And I think my mom knows most of that stuff anyways, I just don't see the point in hitting her over the head with it.

My immediate family all know more gory detail about the bad bits of my life (thankfully, these mostly seem to be receding into history now) than they'll find in my journal anyway. They're welcome to read the good bits on here for balance, if they so desire. :)

Hell, if my mum read my journal and commented occasionally, I could stop feeling guilty about never calling her! :-P

I'm suprised my mom HASN'T found my LJ. She used to sneak into my room and read my journals when I was sleeping. Sometimes I'd hear her banging away looking for it and wake up. She'd say she was just looking for something she needed or that she was cleaning my room. She never interfered or mentioned anything about anything she had read, so whatever.

My brother wouldn't care. He's not a big fan of reading and knows all of my dirt anyway.

MFBF and Chris would deserve whatever anger and pain they dig up for themselves. Most of my entries are locked these days because Duckie won't stop reading.

Extended family is the same as the general public to me. I don't know any of them and simply wouldn't care. Mom's bf doesn't touch the computer.

Jon's already reading and commenting. It's reassuring that I don't have to tell him where I've been and he doesn't pass judgement.

Nephmum found my lj by way of Neph's right after the funeral. I responded by flocking a bunch of stuff and setting it to automagically flock new posts.

She hasn't said anything to me about it since, so. *shrug*

Every now and then I log out and read my LJ with the parent-filter in place. It turns out that my to-lock-or-not instincts at the time of posting are usually okay.

I don't use my name in my LJ, and don't post anything unlocked that I couldn't cope with family members, employers, potential employers, stalkers, burglars or mortal enemies reading. Most of my LJ is friends-only; the public posts, whilst intended for an audience of people who personally know me, are things that would pose no threat in the wrong hands.

Things intended for an audience who don't necessarily know me, meanwhile, go in my separate blog, which is not on LJ.

:-)

I bought a hardcover edition of PZB's Courtney Love bio off eBay for Christmas, mainly to help her with vet costs, and she offers an inscription service, so I just asked her to inscribe it "To David" but she added "live through this" which I thought was rather cool and funny.

There is a reason I lock posts as a matter of course. Where (other than #afp) could I bitch about my family if they were able to read my LJ? Especially considering that the two immediate family members that irritate me the most (mum and middle sis) are the two that are online :/

I'm not sure of anyone in my family being aware of my blog...none have mentioned it, but once or twice I've received some odd remarks in conversation that have been amazingly hit-the-nail-on-the-head accurate and with spookily coincidental timing.
If they were aware of my blog, they'd only see the "for public consumption" posts, which is generally nice and clean with occasional crude jokes and political rantings. ;)
Anything remotely incriminating is in friends-locked posts, not on the public record, though that's more to save my arse if a potential employer/client/contractee goes digging for dirt.
I think it's a healthy level of paranoia; an extension of my "public" versus "private" faces.
It's a small world and sometimes I wish it wasn't quite so small.

When Sarah's parents found my journal and began criticizing me for it, I did a Great Lockdown, and have stayed locked down since.

When my parents discovered it, I friended them, because it was less awkward, and I just filter them out on about a post every three months.

My mother can't even operate a typewriter, much less a computer, so there's no real danger of that one happening.

My dad found my LJ once and used it against me. I've friends-locked my journal ever since (I left that old one).

Your mother needs a lesson in commas.
Point this out.

/zey was developing an automagic friends-lock utility.

Of course, if Mrs G is smart, she'll have read and logged everything before posting.

Firefox has this amazing utility too...

There's nothing in my public journal I wouldn't mind my parents, friends, etc, reading. The locked entries are the ones that could be embarassing, though even those are not very incriminating. Confessing my inner secrets and transmitting them to untrusted computing equipment controlled by others, would be careless.

i f-lock anything that i wouldn't want my bosses or parents to read, usually. that includes anything i post from work, which leads to 90% of my posts being locked.
