This silver hoop of wire.
Mar. 13th, 2006 04:03 pmThe internal wifi card works just fine in the N410c with the Atheros driver. The minus points are that I had to take out the Ethernet NIC (so it doesn't do that any more) and, oddly enough, that the reception is really shit because there's no internal antenna; and, with both cards in the laptop gets confused about where its arse is and I have to disable one and enable the other by hand from the command line. So I'm currently running it on the old external card (getting rid of which was the whole point) and working out what ungainly hardware hacks I can do to fit the laptop with a good antenna. Something running up either side of the display would be ideal. I'll probably take out the internal card and try it in
arkady's new Thinkpad T23 when it arrives, if she can't get the wifi-ethernet mini-PCI from her old Thinkpad A30 to work in it, and work out how to implement a most 'l33t high-gain antenna inside the body of the laptop. Or try to obtain the official Compaq wifi/ethernet/modem mini-PCI. Or something.
I also have a new outboard battery on the way — the cylinder battery that the M300 runs on and that the N400c and N410c can use as a second battery. Which should make everything much nicer with only minor added weight.
The amoxycillin is kicking the infection's arse. Today I have a badly clogged left sinus, to the point of the left side of my face hurting from my eye down to my teeth, and am inhaling lots of eucalyptus steam. I'm basically healthy enough to drink coffee again, though. Mmm, coffee.
I do hope to be well enough to actively look for work again some time soon. That would be most helpful considering my present income is that of a contractor who isn't working.
Update: Apparently, the precisely correct way to add internal wifi to the N410c is to screw the Compaq Multiport Module onto the lid. This is US$49 new from HP US, which is not bad at all. (Or a "get fucked" £188 in the UK.) Sadly all but unknown on eBay.
Update 2: After a day of pressing on my cheekbone to keep my skull from exploding out of my face (felt like), I snorted a drop of eucalyptus oil and an hour later a drop of tabasco. Because frankly, I didn't give a shit any more. This seems to have had some effect.
Update 3: I've taken out the wrong internal card and put back the external PC card. Also upped the memory to 768MB.

Date: 2006-03-13 10:59 pm (UTC)I'll hold off for now :-) I'll see if I can bag this one off eBay. But thank you!
Oddly enough, I just looked inside the lid of mine and it appears to have Bluetooth built in! Pity I have no use whatsoever for Bluetooth ...

Date: 2006-03-14 01:28 am (UTC)There's a couple of computery-bits places not too far from where my parents live, so if he does get a chance to look it shouldn't be too out of the way. It just depends how much rushing around he has to do last minute. :)

Date: 2006-03-14 08:16 pm (UTC)(The other option, of course, is to look and see if you can find someplace that'll overnight it to him without the shipping being too much- he needs to get it in the AM, though, because of when he needs to leave to get to the airport. So that might be just too much work to organize. :) )

So your sinuses, the limbic system in your brain and a large proportion of the contents of your skull are now going, 'Ohshitohshitohshiti'mgoingtodie!!!'.
Beautiful!

Date: 2006-03-14 10:05 am (UTC)Though I'm wondering now if it's not actually some sort of toothache, as my upper left premolars now hurt more than the sinus above ... oh joy.

Date: 2006-03-14 08:21 pm (UTC)In the meantime, warm compresses help with the pain, and also anti-inflammatory drugs (ibuprofen, asprin) which you can take with paracetamol for a little extra boost if the max dose isn't helping enough. (Not sure how that works, as the paracetamol isn't an NSAID.)
Unless you're on something else which prevents the use of certian OTC things, anyway.
