This quiet domesticity stuff is fantastic. It's such a pity I need to get a job. I switched on the phone yesterday for the first time in a week and fetched about ten pimp messages, most of whom had sensibly emailed per the message. My CV is getting some play; some time this weekend I need to hit Jobserve very hard indeed.

[livejournal.com profile] arkady and I bought about £100 worth of CDs from Cash Converters today. I'm busy discovering that pawn shop CDs are beat up enough that even cdparanoia gets upset. I can't beat Exact Audio Copy into working under Wine (Ubuntu Breezy package) and it does a bang-up job on Arkady's new laptop, so I now have a reason to run Windows. Ah well. Oddly, VLC is worst under Unix and best on Mac or Windows (where it's the only reasonable way to play an Ogg) — the Unix version uses crappy GTK+1 widgets and doesn't want to know about your network. Back to amaroK.

(My vinyl records hit Felixstowe any day and, THANK FUCK, my aunt in Amersham has offered to look after them until we move.)

[livejournal.com profile] redcountess and I have been eBay whoring big time. Weird Al Yankovic's "eBay Song" (Flash) is about us.

It's bloody cold and my lungs still aren't up to scratch. I expect my chances of hitting Slimelight approach zero. Dammit. STIR CRAZY. Pub on Sunday or Monday, I expect. MUST GO OUT. EVEN A BIT. Not allowed cloves, though. Pfeh. Just because my loved ones saw me in a hospital bed with an oxygen line up my nose, they're tetchy about the idea of me smoking. Domestic nanny state!

Tried vmware instead of wine or would it be too slow -- of course you still have a windows install but without the hassle of partitions? vmware have a free version now.

*grin* vmware rocks. I've yet to "recurse" it -- emulate linux on my virtual windows. But it's tempting.

Have you checked out the Xiph QuickTime components (http://www.xiph.org/quicktime/)? I've occasionally used the stuff this is based on to play the odd .ogg in iTunes.

Ergh. Can't stand VLC. It's a clunky bastard of a thing, and as a bonus on the Macs I've used it on the audio tends to shift pitch subtly.

The point of using a QuickTime component is that anything that uses QT can then handle the files. iTunes is but one example.

You should most *definitely* not go to Slimes. Whatever nasty bacteria you will pick up there in your now still precarious state of health will surely finish you off.

Don´t do it. There´s always next week. :*

CDs from cash converters are good - my local one has 5 for £10 I think. (Which is a rip off as apparently they give you something like 10p per CD if you are selling).

Always check too how scratched they are first - however I've not had many problems.

My current cheap CD favourites are all the charity shops near me. I'm picking up CD singles (of bands I like) for 25p!

The new ogg itunes plug in works wonders - unlike the one that broke at the end of last year. Itunes can now play 25% of my music collection again.
