I have discovered Goldfrapp and like it a lot. I shall be buying the CDs if their music is available on actual compact discs rather than DRM-infested cheese slices or whatever it is the record companies are putting out these days. (Mute is now owned by EMI.)

This week I have had a streaming head cold and [livejournal.com profile] arkady has had a chipped elbow. This means we have not done house cleaning here, house cleaning at the old flat, high-level negotiations with her arsey real-estate agent, much cooking, job hunting or kicking the arses of bad eBayers. [livejournal.com profile] redcountess has my cold and is suffering badly but has been pursuing Alf alarm clocks with vigor.

My back has been in so much pain over the last couple of days and our mattress is now so awful that I literally cannot sleep on it; tomorrow we will be gently enquiring as to the status of the supar l33t replacement we dropped near on a thousand quid on a few weeks ago. And I have much powerful reminder of why keeping up my back exercises is a good idea.

Easiest thing, if you want DRM free Golfrapp, is buy the lot from iTunes & burn it to CD. The resultant CDs, unlike the ones you buy in the shops or the m4a files you get from iTunes, will be quite free from DRM.

Aww, that's sad. I used to do the photocopying for Mute when I was 8 years old :-D My dad worked there at the time, and being a child I was always welcomed as the only person who could reliably work any of the technology in their office ;)

I love Goldfrapp. Same basket for me as Portishead and Elysian Fields.

I have loved Goldfrapp for quite a while.
Each of their albumns are very different to the others, but also very much her.
Well worth seeing live (I think there is still a London gig on their Supernature tour).

Goldfrapp has got THE most intriguing video (title: "Number 1," I saw it once in the background while I was doing something else), if you can download it at higher res, I highly recommend checking it out.

Hope your new mattress arrives soon, and that the Good Health Fairy pays a visit to your house!!

Ugh, I'm sorry :/

I knew that wasn't a great source, it was just the first one I found that would play the actual video without appearing to be infested with pop-ups. I'm looking for it on SoulSeek, I'll send it your way if I find it :>

It did play just fine for me in WMP, fwiw.

Funny thing is, that I've bought a lot of CDs, from I dunno, mainly around 1998 onwards. And I've never once bought one I can't rip with cdparanoia. Without ever actually actively avoiding "protected" ones. I'm not sure if this is just because my equipment/setup is good or because the DRM is silly.

It's because the DRM is usually built to annoy Windows users by auto-loading crap when the CD is inserted. I'm not sure I've ever heard of any of it being effective against cdparanoia.

cdparanoia was built to deal with broken discs, so it's no great surprise that it does OK with DRM'd material -- that's all they've done to the "CDs", after all.

It's not just that. I'm not sure if this is the case with the crap EMI uses, but some DRM schemes also take "advantage" of audio CD players being more tolerant of errors than CD-ROM drives by fucking with the checksums and all that. As a consequence it also makes the discs less resistant to scratches. This is also partially why they fuck up in car stereos and portable disc players with read-ahead buffering.

Also, getting the songs in a lossy format from iTunes and then burning them to CD kind of defeats half the point of wanting the albums on CD.

Anyway, I generally buy any EMI CDs that have this shit on it from Amazon US. I did get the latest Goldfrapp locally in Australia on SACD, but the regular version was crippled, as was Black Cherry.

I haven't had any problems ripping Goldfrapp, but I bought Supernature when it was released which I guess was a while ago now...

[livejournal.com profile] siani_hedgehog maintains they're Chav Music, but she's so goth she's gone to whitby.
