I hope that when I die, someone perpetrates an elaborate hoax wherein I was one of the greatest musicians of the 21st century, and make a tribute album of songs they claim I wrote but take all the money for because I'm dead.
Thanks for bringing that to our attention David. I feel like I've lost a fellow traveller: and regret not seeing them on their most recent tour. We talked about it and being short of money, decided to do it "next time". Of course, being a purist I would have preferred to see them back in the day when The Gobetweens weren't just Bobbie and Grant.
I don't think you ever went to my flat in Richardson street West Perth (where I met Wendy for the first time) but I had a poster from one of their albums on the wall of my dining room. Blake Barratt was living there at the time and he went to see them one night and again, it was a missed opportunity. Damn all those missed opportunities! Damn all those artists with their self-destructive lifestyles.
You never saw them the first time round? I saw them at the Equator in early 1986. Darn good they were. I even got a tape of it, which I think was in a box of tapes I left with Ross Chisholm when I left Perth in 1994.
I have a memory of you standing in the loungeroom of flat number 6 (later I moved to flat number 4 but I have no memories of you there). It was certainly around that time that I met you, but we didn't know each other very well. This was 1986 and it was another two years before I got the Rover (and seemingly attracted your attention).
I can't believe that I never saw the Gobetweens. Just as I never saw the Triffids before they broke up. Thankfully I caught them after that: you must have been there too, the early Black eyed Susans gig where the whole band attended and got up and played a few songs after the Susans had finished. It was almost as good as the real thing.
Can you get the tapes back? There are a lot of bootleg tapes I'd like: especially early BES when they did all those wonderful covers like "Little Sister" and "Knock on Wood" and the Velvet stuff. If you have any, I'd love to get copies :)
The GBs at Curtin Uni about 20 years ago marked my entry into one great big love affair with Oz music. And I might add that it surprised the heck out of me. I haven't listened to Grant or the GBs for a while, but like the best of friendships, time lost doesn't change what will always be there.
If anyone's doing a ceremony, or attending a service or special gig to remember him, let us know. I'm too far away and my records aren't with me, so I'll toast him with coffee, thanks and tears.
Yes, still here, though 'here' will be somewhere else come July when I have to be gone. The extended family are to take their place in the holiday home for two months, so it's out with the Aussie. Funny how time goes. One moment in September it's "sure, no probs, I can be out by July." Next, it's "Oh, crumbs..."
As for photos, oh I've got many. I need to get them in order so that people can follow their way around BC, Alaska and Alberta. I've got more photos on Flickr. There's some crossover of pics but I'm hoping to make Flickr the main site: http://www.flickr.com/photos/wheresandals
Just caught up with Bernard who had a new little Ixus. Fan-bloody-tastic panoramic shots of Zion and Bryce NPs in the US of A. I like my Fuji - especially the 10x zoom - but I could fall in love with that panoramic function.
