Elwood the rat died this afternoon, of what appears to have been a massive stroke. [livejournal.com profile] arkady noticed him being agitated in his tank (having a seizure) and picked him up out of the cage, and he died thirty seconds later, safe in his mum's hands.

Elwood investigating Eric.

Elwood and Jake were rescue rats that were landed on Arkady about a year ago. They were probably about eighteen months to two years old. This icon is Jake and Elwood on Arkady's shoulder.

We'll be cleaning the rat cage and putting it away again soon. Please hold off with the rescue rats until we've moved! If [livejournal.com profile] quiet000001 moves to the US soon, I can see us suddenly adopting her furballs ...

What a beautiful hooded rattie! A most fortunate rescue rodent who would have had a lovely life...

I may have already discussed it briefly with Arkady. *looks sheepish* (Actually, I was asking about possibly taking them with me, but I'm not sure it'd be fair to stress them out like that, and I wanted to get Arkady's opinion.)

I'm not sure when I'm actually moving, but I'm heading back sometime in August for at least a visit, so if you guys are feeling rat-deprived, you can certainly rat-sit for me then. :)

They were, and they knew it. They were very happy here, and we were very happy to give them that chance. Unfortunately rattie lives are all too brief.

Awww... sorry to hear that. As someone who keeps reptiles, I know very well that a pet doesn't have to be conventional for you to get attatched to it, even if it's something that scares other folks (I'm rather abashed to admit that I like snakes so much because rodents scare me... so filling my house with snakes and cats seemed like a good plan, and only the addition of a ferret could make it better.) It's really, really compassionate of you to offer a home and hearts to a pet that you know has such a short time to be with you.
