From the heart of a Prius 6.
Sep. 5th, 2006 11:51 pmI haven't worked out why it gets so hot, but ktemperature is just the thing to keep an eye on my CPU temperature so the laptop doesn't switch itself off. I am also considering an upgrade to Edgy for added l33tcandy value, but would prefer someone else (not me) shows my weirdarse wifi will in fact work as yet.
Domestic life is really quite lovely at present, modulo house hunting. We have a tentative verbal arrangement to take an extra week or two here if we need it, and there should be more stuff for the girls to look at soon.
arkady went to Camden and got Whitby tix for
redcountess,
txxxpxx and Mr Pop and myself. SO BLOODY MUCH NEEDED HOLIDAY. I should even have my licence back by then. And this evening I grabbed
drpete and
mmcpoland's old hifi cassette deck, all ready for me to have something to plug it into.
I will be at B-Movie Friday because I will explode from stircrazy otherwise. I plan to go straight from work, so expect to see me there from doors opening until just after midnight. SHOW UP EARLY so I can see you.

Date: 2006-09-06 10:12 am (UTC)I think the problem is not inherent lack of cooling ability in the laptop (although I may open it up to clean out dust etc preemptively) - it's that ACPI won't switch on the fans when it should. I'm tempted to write a script that will monitor the temperature itself and force the fans on if needed, since the kernel isn't. (And in this regard I'm blaming the weird-arse orinoco_usb wifi driver, since it gets its tentacles into every damned thing and fouls up all it touches. Vile thing.)

Date: 2006-09-07 10:30 am (UTC)Hah, now if it was a PowerBook, you'd be wasting £55 every three months replacing the shite PSU that comes with it. My two year old battery still holds about three hours of charge - assuming I'm able to charge it in the first place.
Somewhat scarily, the recommendation appears to be to buy a clone PSU from Craplins for about £20, which is allegedly better than the Apple one.
