Sunday: [livejournal.com profile] cyberneph was so damn bored she came from Wokingham to R*mf*rd to have someone to hang out with. And I promised her drinks later, of course. So we sat down to a nice meal of spaghetti carbonara and a surprisingly drinkable bottle of perry.

Off to the pub for the BOFHbof at 5pm, and the Crosse Keys is ... shut. (Did catch Ali and [livejournal.com profile] zotz there, bringing the goth contingent for the day to its final total of four.) I realise it's in the city - and it's distinctly weird being in the busiest part of the entire country and watching the tumbleweeds blow through it - but I had been told it was still open on Sundays ... ahem. There was a redirection note (on [livejournal.com profile] solipsistnation's business card) to the Green Man. So we got there and ... that was shut too. Bloody Wetherspoon's.

Thankfully, MBM found us and directed us to the Anchor, just over Southwark Bridge, which was about it for pubs in the City on a bank holiday Sunday. And we found assorted BOFHs (particularly [livejournal.com profile] solipsistnation and [livejournal.com profile] jehanna, for whose benefit the BOFHbof had been called - visiting England for their honeymoon) and settled in for copious drinking, some eating and a lot of BOFH, goth and GoFH Wildean conversational brilliance. [livejournal.com profile] solipsistnation had the coolest little digital camera - 2 megapixels, US$300 plus US$60 for the 128MB memory card. I could almost afford one of these toys.

(And I found out what [livejournal.com profile] zotz actually does for a living: he's an editor on the Human Genome Project. His job title is 'Finisher'. How unspeakably cool! "I know what you're thinking, punk - you're thinking, did he delete six Darwin Award contenders or only five? Well, to tell you the truth, I kinda forgot myself in all this excitement. But being this here's my editorial red pencil, the most powerful genetic tool in the world, and would blow your gonads clean off, you've got to ask yourself one question: Do I feel stupid? ... Well, do you, punk?")

Thence to a nearby pizza place, thence to crash in Hendon. Handy hint for Sunday travel by public transport: don't be ten minutes late for the last tube home.

Monday: Hung around in Hendon and sorted out details of moving in as best I could based on the little knowledge I had to hand. Then off to a FUN FAIR!! on Hampstead Heath. 'Fun' apparently involves riding on large whirling machinery and vomiting whilst being deafened by selections from Most Annoying Disco Hits Of The Last Thirty Years, Vol. XCLVI. We sat down by the pond (an idyllic English autumn day, really, except for the noise from the FUN FAIR!!) and threw cigarette butts to the pigeons.

Alli (not Ali) called (and [livejournal.com profile] perverse_idol texted), and we met in Camden. Went to the Dev and she made a pint of snakebite and green last three hours. Which has gotta be a contender. [livejournal.com profile] greap, [livejournal.com profile] darklyng and [livejournal.com profile] perverse_idol showed up later on (namedrop, namedrop). I went home and fell asleep in short order.

I'm surprised how much drink I manage to score on no money at all when I set my mind to it. I owe so much BOFH karma.

No idea.

Well, if you find out please do let me know.

I was profoundly interested because I thought it'd be another six months before digital cameras would reach a suitable price point for me.

You know they can be gotten for a lot less than $300, yeah?

my digi/webcam is 2 megapixels, and was fairly inexpensive, that's why I bought it. Only drawback is you don't have a viewer, and it comes standard with an 8 meg flash card.

So you've found new digs?

It's a Canon PowerShot S200, Digital Elph.

It's really nice. Even the picture that I took of the skyline (St. Paul's cathedral, I think, surrounded by cranes), where people said "You know, that's just going to be a silhouette" came out.

Photos of this gathering (including a nice one of Ali) will be posted at some point in the next week or so, once I sort them out. They should give you a pretty good idea of how well this thing works. I'm really happy with it, anyway. It's about the size of the palm of my hand and fits into a shirt pocket (with the flap buttoned) so I didn't worry about carrying it through the tube and all over the place, even in places where I'd otherwise be nervous about having ~400 bucks of easily-grabbable technology on my person.

Thanks. I've been looking at the PowerShot G2, but that's really too much for my budget; it's good to know the one that costs less is good as well.

Do you have a URL for that?

They should give you a pretty good idea of how well this thing works.

If you remember, could you please let me know where I can check them out? Thanks. :>
