The good news is that we're moving! The bad news is that we're moving!

The landlard came around this afternoon with his builder (who actually built the bathroom) and his business partner and [livejournal.com profile] arkady and [livejournal.com profile] redcountess showed him the subsiding floor in the bathroom (with sinking bath, wobbling toilet and only just legal lighting) and the carpet that had been nailed in place over the very grotty old carpet that was now infested with silver carpet moths and their accompanying worse-than-cat-pee smell.

To repair the bathroom will require rebuilding it and the carpets will need to be removed completely from the entire house and the floorboards fumigated. Arkady casually pointed out that HSE would certainly take one look at the place and declare it unfit for human habitation. The business partner quietly offered to break the lease at one month's notice and give our deposit back.

I'm on call week after next (so no final Dreadnought for me. Bugger! Visitors most welcomed, though) and the third week in February, so we'll probably aim to be out at the end of that week.

Lunch with [livejournal.com profile] eyeliner297 yesterday was luvverly if short. Getting smashed with the Wikinerds on Tuesday was good also. The Montagu Pyke is a hideous beer barn that must be destroyed. Everyone's jaw was dropping at Arsenal beating Liverpool 6-3, though.

I think I know what I'm doing this weekend, and it involves houses and hunting.

I just want to know if "landlard" is a deliberate choice or a Freudian slip.

I hope that we'll have moved in four weeks, the weekend of the 10th/11th - I really don't want to be moving any closer to my 23 hour flight to Australia than that!

I'm sure you've looked into this, but depending on your lease, shouldn't the landlord help you with moving costs etc? Something similar happened to a friend in Perth, and the landlord basically ferried him around until he found a nice new house, and then paid all the associated costs including deluxe removalists. It's not fair that you and your family are inconvenienced because of something beyond your control. They shouldn't have rented the house in the first place, in this condition and I'm sure they had some idea about it.

The laws are different there of course, but you might like to check your lease or speak to a real estate agent about it. Moving house is a real hassle - I hope it all goes well for you.

Obviously, you live in a country where tenants have rights.

Move first, then see how much being a pain in the arse you are collectively up to.

I think the operative words....

....are "tried to build the bathroom."

Betcha the stairs are going to need rebuilding, too, since one of you said that the bottom one sagged.

Best wishes.
