I came off call at five and proceeded to get ready for an evening at the Dev. [livejournal.com profile] arkady was going stir-crazy too, so came with me. Dinner at Super Bowl Noodle Bar, then to the Dev, where [livejournal.com profile] miss_amethyst had brought her mum and dad. [livejournal.com profile] eyeliner297 showed in due course. Lots of other luvverly people too. I had four pints and was quite tiddly by night's end. And Arkady did okay because it was relatively smoke-free.

Dad, Yana and Mum

I spent today at work shagging goats. Home to an interview with National Public Radio about Wikipedia deletion and notability policies, wherein I carefully restrained myself from calling everyone involved festering fuckwits, then a chat to a Foundation person about liaison with another organisation. We're really at that difficult stage of a charity's life where it really needs to move up to the next level. I predict our next big splash will be Wikimedia Commons, especially when we have an indexing and tagging system that doesn't suck on ice. Cower like Britannica, Getty Images!

Then the box moving. Boxes off Arkady's mattress so we can assemble the bed, fish out her G3 and G4 and hook them to the Sun 21" CRT and play CDs on them 'cos we don't have a third long Ethernet cable. I really need a four-port switch for the dining room.

Phoned [livejournal.com profile] redcountess and tried diagnosis on the PowerBook. Booting into firmware with Command-Option-O-F gave us the Open Firmware prompt OK, but it hung the moment it tried to look at the hard disk. So either the disk is faulty or unseated or the disk controller's gone. She'll be taking it in for repair later Tuesday. Special *pint* to [livejournal.com profile] damned_colonial for offer of the Tiger disk to help bring it back — this may still be useful if the machine comes back with a working but wiped disk. Liz is hiring a laptop for the next few weeks, so should be back on the air soon.

Commons is fabulous and generally unknown. The problem with images, as always, is copyvios. I've been looking at coin images (connected to tuxpaint) and the number that are GFDLed appalls me. (They are clearly derivative works of the Crown Copyright original).

I've had to play the bastard and explain why we can't have images of British coins but we can have images of American coins in a GPLed program. The lead developer has asked me to write this stuff up as an FAQ ;) Of course our images of Canadian and Euro coins may have go too :(

I guess we (wikipedia) have policy on this sort of stuff but I couldn't find it trivially.. Copyright fascism is unpleasant and I'd rather quote Wikipedia policy than pull something out of my arse..

As for Mr nn delete - it's clearly vanity. He's admitted to editing it and checks it every so often.. Why do we have notability? To stop spam and adverts. We're not web hosting.

The cleaning lady stuff is bizarre. The idea that she can have an article if she wants one, but not if she doesn't is totally missing the point. We are an encyclopedia not your personal ego masseur.

Of course the AfD wankers get off on it a bit, and people seem to like writing notability guideliness for projects they don't get. Some arsehole decided to write a really strict criteria on albums without consulting the album project. Needless to say he doesn't like popular music..

Ok, so at least it boots into OF. So we know the pboko is not completely broken (which, if it was a case of the logic board being broken it'd be pretty much so as it would not be worth the while to have repaired). Apple would probably just replace the hard drive -It would be a pity if you lost what you had in the computer without back ups, but I understood from Dave's post that you have some from xmas time? In any case, you sure don't need the stress... hope it all works out x
