FreeBSD seems to be working nicely on this box. Got X to start, too. Went into KDE, but I can do something more sensible with that later. Now to get it to start other than as root, of course. Mouse wheel and sound would be good too. I'm sure all will be in order soon enough.

if you're talking about starting X, you need to install the xwrapper port. For sound, read http://www.freebsd.org/doc/en_US.ISO8859-1/books/handbook/sound-setup.html, or kldload snd might work straight off the bat.

Mouse wheel, add 'Option "ZAxisMapping" "4 5"' to the InputDevice section.

The X server needed the setuid bit set, and sound works as per the handbook. The mouse wheel is being a bugger, and the recommended procedures for imwheel don't seem to be working. Also, it's forgotten it has a UK keyboard attached to it.

But I'm sure another day of mucking around will produce results :-)
