If you want to buy a new compact digital camera and want something that does high ISO, most are selling snake oil. The Fuji F30/F31 is the only one that's any bloody good at all over ISO 400 — even beating the larger Canon S3 and G7. I don't plan to replace my Canon Ixus 50 (which doesn't pretend to go over ISO 400) any time soon, but oooh I'm tempted.

Pembury Tavern last night, with Freda, who slept most of the time and didn't appreciate the noise much. Nice to see people.

Miserable day today. I would like a sleep cycle, please.

I love love love my Fuji F30. I know that much of this is in-camera noise-reduction processing. But its low-light performance knocks the socks off our (admittedly aging) EOS 300D. It also does low-light 640x480 video that's better than my camcorder delivers. I bought it specifically to take concert photos and videos, mostly in very difficult environments. If you sit at the front of (eg) the folk club, and prop up the front of the camera on a beer mat, you can take really cracking video of the musicians. And because it's a tiny compact, the chances of your being thrown out of a 'real' concert for using it are remote.

I should add that I'd previously had a camera in the tiny Pentax Optio S range. Going to the Fuji nearly doubled the camera size (it's still pretty small though). It was a wrench giving up the true carry-anywhere nature of the Optio, but it has been absolutely worth it. Of course, a lot of people didn't like the Optio S because men with big fingers find it Too Damn Small and there were loads of control compromises to deliver the size. The Fuji F30 is quite small enough unless your calculation is "I want to take it everywhere and I'm already carrying two blackberries, a Nintendo DS and an iPod".
