Freda has discovered colic! I am in fact dead; I have been reanimated through a DTI-sponsored zombification process involving the replacement of the blood stream with caffeine. Yesterday's events could have been resolved effortlessly with several decent cups o' brew.

Work today involves a Java WebStart application that fails with different errors depending which PC it's run from and which web directory one goes to to start the app. The sooner this rubbish is open sourced, the happier I'll be — programmers may love Java, but the commercial sysadmins stuck with herding it do not.

I'm unconvinced there are real programmers that love Java.
Corporate systems analysts or something maybe....

That's the only way my brain can perceive that sentence. Before noon anyhow.

She'll be OK once I can get some Infacol for her; the "awake with screaming baby till 2am" thing does get wearying y the third night though. And she's basically woken up today and carried on screaming on and off for the past 3 hours. Colic is one of those things that's hell for everyone. :-/

I'm told sometimes there's no definable (?) reason for it either, and that it can be a number of things. So I'm prepared for screaming.... Oooooer! I do wonder how long it'll take before Seb's good fatherly intentions include sleeping on the sofa when he returns to work, bless! I'd understand if he did though. 8w 6d and I'll have our little girl too...

In Freda's case I think it's trapped wind, so hopefully the Infacol should help. She's not been as bad as my first daughter was though, for which I'm grateful - I really don't fancy spending every night walking up and down the kitchen with a screaming baby all night for three months the way I did with her!

Does Freda 'room-in' with you, in bed I mean? I have read that it can be bad but I have met loads of young women who are trying it and some who do that 'baby in a sling everywhere they go' thing and their babies are so so happy compared to some of the others I see. I won't do the sling thing but I wonder if I might feel happier f my baby is happy sleeping with us instead of next to us in the moses basket. I dunno. And would this help sooth her anyway, was why I was mentioning it!

Am curious about various methods of parenting - I refuse to take on anyone's advice, I just like to know how other people's experiences have been so I can make up my own mind. Have you tried this?

Hope Freda feels better soon. A new friend's new baby had wind the other day and we hadn't realised that was what was wrong til he farted real loud and then smiled!!! I have so much to look forward to and experience, is it ever embarrassing in a way when you baby farts loudly in public? Or does everyone laugh and go 'ahhh'?

Yup, Freda and I co-sleep, as I did with both my first two. It's much more convenient for night-time breastfeeds, for a start! ;-) When I bought the pushchair, I deliberately went for one with a carrycot so she could sleep in that for the first six months, but she's never been in it - she sleeps with me instead. And she hates her pushchair and much prefers being in a sling! SO yes, I'm very much doing the "attached parenting" thing - though I'm hoping she'll take to her pushchair enough to give my back a rest sometimes, as she's now up to 8lb 11oz!

Unfortunately, when she has an attack of colic not much will soothe her; it frequently comes down to just holding her on my shoulder, patting her back as I rock her and talking or singing quietly to her until she finally wears herself out and falls asleep... at which point her stomach relaxes enough to bring up a burp of wind, or it bubbles out the other end as a fart. The problem is that whilst she's screaming, she's gulping in more air which leads to more trapped wind and it's a vicious circle.

I suspect freda's farts are more embarassing to Diva than to me, as invariably Liz and I giggle and say "We know where she gets that from!"

Kaya will get hers from me, though since Seb gave up smoking for us, and has started actually eating, he can be surprising now and again...

We have a babycarrier as though slings look great and snuggle the baby, Seb just feels out of place with the ones we've had access to and he is ok with the carrier. He does like pushing the pushchair about though and such. Such a funny one, him.

I don't think we'll do attached parenting - Seb says he wants me to give her some 'Kaya time' too - I'm just worried I'll not manage to put her down as I'LL be too attached! But we'll work out what works for us best as a family. I just like to know what people think of various methods so I might know what to possiby expect if we try something. We both want to learn baby massage, I get to learn for free at my centre and can then show Seb how, so he can bond with Kaya as he will work.

But isn't java "the new black". I understand that C is like COBOL now, or something..
