So much for that on-call. I slept all afternoon and am now sitting around not doing housework. We just upped [livejournal.com profile] arkady's laptop from 384MB to 512MB RAM and it's booting fast and not thrashing. Don't try running Kubuntu in less than 512MB, mmmkay. (She just upgraded from 6.06 to 7.10 and is using the XP Teletubby lookalike theme. Ew.)

I've made no actual plans for next week. I suppose I should. (*wave* to [livejournal.com profile] faithais and [livejournal.com profile] pndc) Prace bookings now!

This Sunday, 5pm to closing: my birthday drinks at the Pembury. See you there.

Cardboard Star Wars is teh win!!!

As per most comments of this sort, wish I lived in London, would at least sneak into the pub under the pretence of a paying customer to hug you a happy birthgay!

But have an ace one.

Can we have more pics and such of Freeeeeeeeeeda please? Love her name so much.

xubunutu is a little less memory hungry than ubuntu in my experience. Not compared with kubuntu. Xubuntu runs just fine in 512 with no swap.

256MB is borderline for most stuff. Live CDs certainly very unhappy. I've got 768MB in this celeron 1200 and gnome is happy :)

Thanks for the link. I'm passing it on, because this particular situation just pushes all of my WHAT FUCK NO buttons.

I'm completely unsurprised to discover that the female body hair blog is French.

As for a booze-up plans next week, I'm up for that, but we can figure out details at your 21st 21st. I've found some actual *nice* pubs in Soho now...

I was so underwhelmed by the quality of Vodafone's content proxy, that I ended up slapping a copy of Squid on an external box and setting up a ssh tunnel from my laptop to said proxy.

In theory it's possible to get the content bar lifted by getting a nominal charge to your credit card to prove that you're over 18, but Voda changed their T&Cs on me and I left before I got to test this. One of those anonymous disposable Mastercards would probably suffice if you don't have a credit card.

Yeah - or I need an current passport or driving license. I don't have either of those - but I'd only be getting a disposable credit card for this (and some of them require a passport etc to set up..)

I have a friend offering me a SOCKS proxy but ssh is broken on this machine. I've been using Tor to look at things on flickr.

Vodafone's content control is a totally retarded piece of crap. It's not close to over 18 - it's more like over 12..

T-Mobile's isn't much better. I'd have concrete examples, except the browser in the Samsung I keep the T-Mobile SIM in is utter, utter shite and so the only sites I've tried to load on it so far are LiveJournal, Facebook and eBay -- all three of which got the "prove you're 18 first, boyo" page. Oh, wait, add The Hun to that list (although in that case, fair play) and also the BBC News site. Bleh.

Thank fuck vodafone don't block LiveJournal. BBC news site being blocked would be really fucked.

This evening content control broke (briefly) and I looked at flickr for an hour. I also had the option to use google chat!
