  • How to boot a steam locomotive. What a hundred and fifty years ago would have inspired socialist revolution is now something volunteers willingly reliably get up at three to do.

"If I search on green upside goblin blue water bolt ..." Coherence is not my strong suit at present, having left work at five yesterday with a pounding headache, my body feeling like it'd been hit by a truck and the mental acuity of something not very on the ball at all. Apparently it's warm today; I'm shivering and sweating. Working a computer is an iffy proposition at best, and talking on the phone is right out. La la la whine. At least I don't have the respiratory symptoms. Whine whine poot.

So, tell me things other than "get well soon." What have you been up to?

It's my belief that the cool factor of working on a steam engine was a significant reason why people did it even back when it was a backbreaking day job. Small children (of all ages) went "ooooh!" at a steam engine in 1930 as much as they do in 2008. When you take away the backbreaking daily effort and turn it into every couple of weeks, I can easily see the cool factor outweighing the lack of sleep.

Oil? Oil? What is this nonsense?

{Yes . . . yes, I am just jealous)

Have you been to the National Railway Museum in York? They have an impressive array of old locos there.

As I recall, it is THE MOST FUN PLACE ON THE PLANET, EVER.

(My views on the matter may have been skewed by the fact that when I went there I was, well, five. But I suspect it's still pretty neat.)

No, we keep meaning to go for the day when we're in Whitby but D was too sick to drive that far the last two we went to (and I was very disappointed to miss the bicentenary of steam the other year)

Getting ready for a trip to Florida in two weeks, preparing for the Czarina's birthday, and continuing to sell government secrets to the Daleks. How about you?

It misses the vital step in the Engine Driver's Handbook of cooking a fried breakfast on a shovel.

I have mostly been trying to remain sane and not lose my rag bigtime at a few people who are making life extremely vexing at the moment, and looking forward to being able to get away from work for more than twelve hours... Not that that's going to happen any time soon (see point 1).

Somehow managed to go from "single for 12 years" to "I have two boyfriends" in the space of three months.

Even I'm impressed ;-)
