Today's monumental yak-shaving is reripping my CDs to FLAC, from whence I may rerip to anything convenient as I please. With hard disks these days, this is just fine.

I was going to meet up with snowspinner, who is in London, but am still ill. Bah.

One day we will get all our washing both washed and dried. There's one clothes horse that's been outside full for a week now.

redcountess has half rebuilt the spare room so we can fit a spare bed in it for the girls visiting in a week. We found all manner of previously lost things ... some of that stuff's been in boxes for two years. Or was it four?

I remain around through Tuesday evening. Theater on Monday and Tuesday, but we're free before theater. And, at least in an abstract theory, maybe after. In any case, if you feel better give a call.

I've also been shaving that particular yak. Or, at least, snipping a bit off every now and then when I feel like it. And then new acquisitions go to FLAC, which means I'll be wanting to write the other part of that Real Soon Now.

Hm. I have both kinds of music: the kind that FLAC compresses by 50%, and the kind that FLAC compresses by 30%.

So many fascinating languages packed into such a small part of the globe. A pity they all want to kill each other.

The Ossetians, north or south, are apparently the last people speaking a descendant of the language of the Scythians, who were the primo barbarians of the Greco-Roman world. One tribe of Amazons were Scythians, the one whose capital was Colchis.

The Caucasians are still considered the likeliest people to speak languages that are cousins to the Indo-European family.

OOh. Friend supermouse has been pointing out the oil pipeline that runs from the Caspian Sea through Georgia. And now it looks like Russia is going to annex South Ossetia (or take it back). Which is still a bit north of the pipeline.
But looking at the ethnic map you linked, there's another concentration of Ossetian people at about the same latitude as Tbilisi. Where the pipeline is. So there you have cause and excuse.
