Just off the phone to the world. Fuck me, do they actually sell beds for non-midgets in this country? Are you all malevolent dwarves who actually consider a five-foot-wide mattress "king size"? I'm desperately searching for a six-foot-wide mattress that's actually in stock anywhere, won't take four to six sodding weeks to order in and won't cost most of a thousand quid. Tips gratefully welcomed.

Oh, er, last few days. Borrowed a metric shitload of books from [livejournal.com profile] marnameow on Wednesday and retrieved my music hard disk. And my hat. Marlborough Head on Thursday was good, though the smoke got to even me by about nine. Stayed in last night rather than Tenebraeing, but I did discover to my horror that Midori and tequila is actually surprisingly drinkable. Maybe it could be called the Girlie Lolly Go Out And Burn The Street Down or something.

My bed in BrisVegas is much wider than the one here!! I always wondered whey there are no Queen size beds here - would it be considered as an affront to the Monarchy? When Charlie takes over, will the King size beds suddenly be renamed Queen so we don't offend him too?

I have a theory. The world really is full of malevolent dwarves. And they aren't just making the beds too small, they're building everything too damned small. Trying to wash dishes most places gives me a sore back as a result.

I don't have a malevolent bone in my body ... it's all in my brain.

Tell me about it... And it's not just beds: let's look into the whole low ceilings question as well. The world's designed around shortarses and it's not bloody fair. :-)

Would this be a good time for me to have my rant about clothes shops that have really lovely stuff in the Petite range which they then don't stock in their normal size range. Assuming their normal size range has anything long enough anyway...

They're making beds for Charles I?

I'd suggest MFI, who tend to carry a reasonable amount of stock in their bigger shops, but my king size bed is from them, and it's a British king size - 5ft x 6ft 6 so not much use. They do seem to have a large king size divan on their website, although it doesn't say how big that actually is. www.mfi.co.uk

Fairly uninspiring selections though, although the one I got is lovely (and no longer stocked).

Good luck.

If you find the big bed supplier, can you also ask if they do kitchens and desks scaled for people my size? Cheers.

Argos do 6ft x 6ft 6 beds. Just a boring divan (http://www.argos.co.uk/webapp/commerce/command/ExecMacro/ols_prod_detl.d2w/report?hopper=CatSrch). 14 days delivery.

Marks and Spencer also have 6ft x 6ft 6 (well they're 180 x 200, which is the same isn't it?) but the delivery will be much longer.

Spot the woman with lots of furniture catalogues...

but seriously.
beds of the size you describe are called either 'super-kingsize' or 'emperor-size' in the UK. They do tend to be on the expensive side. Have a look at: http://www.onlinecabinets.co.uk/airsprung/royal_emperor.asp

I think you're prolly stuck on the bed front, unless you have too much money to spend. A van across to france might net you one, maybe? I think beds are a bit bigger in Europe. I know bedlinen is.

I used to get around it by having a metric bed. 2m x 2m ?
PITA to buy fitted sheets for, but the size would be right for me ... unfortunately I have no idea where you'd buy one.

You can get them in contential europe - it seems to be one of the standard-ish sizes there. I know this because I returned with bedlinen last time I went to Belguim.

Mmm. The reason I have a double rather than a kingsize is that I like my duvet to be a size larger than my bed (much snugglier, and prevents too much arguing over 'who's got all the covers'!). And bedlinen larger than kingsize is expensive.

You'll be wanting what's called a "super king." You'll most likely have to wait for the bed and it will be expensive (we bought one in 2000; the one that's never been delivered and we never got our money back, so don't buy from Bed Shed), but you should be able to obtain a mattress the same day at most furniture stores if you have a way to get it home.

Beds of size in the UK

We bought one of the King size Argos Divans for Mason while we were there and he fit okay, we just bought the cheapest King size we could find so we got this:

http://www.argos.co.uk/webapp/commerce/command/ExecMacro/ols_prod_detl.d2w/report?prrfnbr=6440437&prmenbr=6970&type=big&thisMode=ols&cgrfnbr=380186

At 170 quid it's not too bad, the only annoying thing about Argos is of course that you can't go into the shop and flop on it to see if you fit.

Of course I'm back in the land of cheap furniture and warehouse stores where you can paw over everything so what do I care :P

for random reference, US bed measurements are:

twin: 95cm x 190cm
full: 135cm x 190cm
queen: 150cm x 200cm
king: 190cm x 200cm

And there's a fairly standard "extra-long" modifier that adds on 10 cm to any of the above. Being 190cm in length myself, I prefer the 200cm beds.

So an Australian queen size bed is the same as what they call a Califronia King in the U.S? I had no idea! Do you know how big a king size bed is in Australia?

California Kings are the longest standard size in the U.S, but a normal king size is only four inches shorter and the widest at 6½ feet. It must be cool to be on a bed that's wider than I am tall. Shit, if U.K. bed sizes are anything to go by, a quad could sleep comfortably on that bed in that country! =)

I kinda like the way the Dutch refer to bed sizes—they simply say the dimensions in centimetres every time, instead of making up goofy names for them.

Well hello there! Yah, that'd be me, the Brisbanite. You too, huh? We should know each other, considering there's only about one and a half million people in Brisbane...

Maybe we can rectify that here in London some time?

It's just interesting because as many people will attest it's difficult to have been around the Brisbane goth scene and not at least have seen me.

I'm actually not in London anymore having returned to Brisbane in May, but I keep in contact with a bunch of the uk_goffs over the net.
