Freda just managed to break — as in utterly smash — the power socket on redcountess's laptop. Well done! (It's a crappy thing soldered to the motherboard. Official HP repair is motherboard replacement. Spare sockets are readily available on eBay for anyone handy with a soldering iron.) Until we can get a replacement, it's currently powered off the CD dock ("slice"). Which I bought a DVD player for, as Liz's early Christmas present!

Freda also managed a very clever trick: arkady was playing her In The Night Garden on YouTube while I was dismantling Liz's laptop to see just how broken the power socket actually was. Arkady got up to check the cakes she was baking. Freda pounded on the keyboard at random and was delighted to see that, having hit the spacebar, the video started again. gothgeekgirl, she's really earned the Defcon clothes.

Seth is a very odd man. He was one of the tutoring staff in my Freshman year study group at MIT. Nice enough guy, but I really do wonder what colour the sky is in his world.

Contract System Administrator, Not a tutor

1) While you said "tutoring staff", note I was never a tutor, but system administrator, and formally a contractor rather than staff (this matters because if you ever called MIT and asked if I was on *staff* there, they would say no - I was a *contractor*, which is different).

2) In my world, the sky is usually black with a few white dots and a smallish white thing that regularly oscillates between being a disk and a crescent. If this differs from blue with a very bright yellow thing that's always a disk, it's all a matter of perspective.

Trust me when I say I fear she's a natural, and that's why the clothes suit her. We have a photo (somewhere, probably still on a camera) of her in the Defcon T-shirt reading Liz's copy of "Linux In A Nutshell".

Now for something completely different. I was discussing marriage with my students on Tuesday. I didn't mention you by name, but I did manage to use you as an example of harmony and peace in relationships by not constraining/confining them to terms set forth by societal belief structures. Definitions are never black or white, but there is a grey area that most people don't want to acknowledge. The conversation was quite good, and I think you would have been proud to hear that many students were open to that type of thinking. Some were not, of course but still the few can overpower the weak. lol Mostly, I want people to understand that marriage isn't what people think it means. They need to know that connotations of words can be hurtful. Anyway, you get my point, I am sure.

I think the example could be also that you can be in a non-traditional relationship, not qualify it with titles and such per say and still be happy. People, here, tend to be too tightly bound by terms, like Marriage, single, divorced, etc...

I do live in "The Bible Belt," so there is always that issue, too. If you aren't married, in the eyes of the lord, then your marriage isn't legitimate. I was actually told that my marriage isn't legitimate because we were married by a pagan woman, and not in the Lord's home. So, I explained that I was comfortable with my union, then. It was fun, actually, to hear what the students had to say.
