reddragdiva: (stress relief)

Freda loved the snow yesterday. She cried when she had to come in. [livejournal.com profile] nyecamden visited too.

Today (Tuesday) is [livejournal.com profile] redcountess's seventh birthday (again). We are poor but loving, so I haven't got her present yet. I did, however, spend yesterday evening and this evening transplanting the screen from [livejournal.com profile] purplecthulhu's dead 550MHz TiBook to her 1GHz TiBook, using the guides from PowerBook Medic. It all went a bit Haynes and I had to reverse-engineer just what these two completely undocumented cables did, not to mention the helpful note that every screw in the thing except two is a T-8 Torx, and never mind they're all of different lengths and shaft diameters. Bring me the head of the psychotic fuckwit who designed this thing. Apple: beautiful hardware on the outside ... just never, ever look in the box.

It's been running 45 minutes now and hasn't melted. Call me Victor von Frankenbook. I was a bit worried about the heatsink connection. We'll see how it goes.

I am writing this from my Evo N410c which I let Liz put Windows on. Ew. I'm using Chrome, which is a very nice browser. There appear to be rather a lot of advertisements on this "web" thing you people use, though.

And how many of those screws just didn't seem to fit anywhere when you went to put stuff back together?

(Somewhere I have a bunch from my 800MHz iBook, from when I took it apart to get at the HD after the video died the final death. It didn't seem to mind their absence after I finally got around to reassembling it.)

We took the same iBook to bits twice, never ever again.

I dunno, the insides of this G5 minitower are pretty well put together, with lots of thought for air flow and the like. Laptops are going to be harder to deal with, because of the making it small.

Much what I was about to say. Apple are a bit divided on this issue -- if they think you should be opening it up, they can make them real nice, and the towers are (and have been since back in the era of the blue smurf G3 towers) a delight to work with. And the laptops, if you want to do anything customers shouldn't do, have always sucked.

I just built a new machine with a dual core athlon 64 and there've actually been a couple times I was afraid it was getting hypothermia.
