Kubuntu 9.04 alpha 4 came out yesterday and works worse than alpha 3: the touchpad doesn't work. (This is in the release notes, but can't be fixed while the network is still broken.) Thank you for your suggestions, none of them worked. I am currently on Windows and it's icky.

Today's music is Bullshit 3¼, a 1970 prog album in Hebrew (with titles in English) by Danny ben Israel. The music is deeply fucked up and smoking remarkable quantities of crack in all sorts of ways. It could be just what I needed.

Nice lunch with [livejournal.com profile] nyecamden today. Unlikely to have a date this weekend, as the house has mice (we have two cats. What on earth do they think they're doing?) and I have all the cupboards to clean. Also doing another Extreme Room Shuffle.

I hope to make Bisexual Underground on Tuesday — anyone else?

I've been arguing with ubuntu to get fonts to look right. arrgh. that took too damn long.

Yeah, sadly. Though I've made progress with doing
fontconfig-config
then
fontconfig
as root.

(I use a bitmap Monaco in my xterms)

The Ubuntu at ork does a passable job of fonts. I keep vaguely meaning to see what it's doing that stock Debian isn't. (But I've slaughtered enough chickens into my ~/.fonts.conf on the latter that I rarely care.)

If I'm well enough I'll try and make BU.

That list was well-timed. I was just coming to the conclusion that I did a hell of a lot more graphic design work at my graphic design job than I ever gave myself credit for because I gave a bunch of teenagers a 6 post lecture on why white text on a beige background is a bad fucking idea no matter how pretty they think it is.

Turns out that they thought that "experience with layout" meant "I used photoshop to crop and caption my vacation photos last year" rather than "I have spent hours sweating over the design of a page to make sure that all of the elements line up properly and don't undermine the quality of my design."

"Yeah, but it's PRETTY!" "*SIGH* AGAIN, I did not say it wasn't pretty. I said that nobody will be able to READ it. You DO want people to be able to READ the poetry, don't you? Then, don't use fucking white on fucking beige!"

I kind of love being a know-it-all and telling people what to do. If they don't listen, it's nobody's fault but theirs.

I like this! I'm trying to work out how I can include it in my CV in a way that still makes me sound employable... :)

I don't think the people who made that list have ever met a graphic designer.

There's not mention of an overwhelming sense of self-importance, or the ability to whiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiine at the drop of a hat.
