Contemplating the record cull. Probably not before we leave here. Which is annoying in itself. My middle-aged rocknerd boss expressed his sympathy today and confessed that he too downloads someone else's rip rather than bother digging out the vinyl.

Ripping the tapes is going to be the real work. I do have the cassette deck rigged up and working.

25 years later, The Moodists' Engine Shudder sounds remarkably mellow, as hideous racket goes. And Killing Joke's 2006 album Hosannas From The Basements Of Hell is very good indeed; you should seek out a copy. They aimed to invoke 1979.

Go me, I've actually digitised all of my old tapes!

It wasn't too much bother, although it would be somewhat more difficult now because I dumped the tape deck along with all of the tapes.

When I began the process I found cutting up the tracks (after getting the levels right and dehissing, which was far worse on copied tapes) was a much bigger time suck than I had expected.

Fortunately, most of mine were off-air recordings that didn't need splitting, just top-and-tailing. I really ought to offer them back to the BBC archives as I believe they reused the master tapes.

The stuff that was just copies of CDs was easily dealt with: I went and bought the CDs and binned the bootlegs without bothering to digitise them.

Personally, I though that album was more the culmination of their metallic period (post-Democracy) and that Absolute Dissent was more deliberately targeting the 79/81 era.

Somewhat ironically, it has "The Great Cull" on it. I doubt it's about someone reducing his record collection. But it might be.

If I don't see you on Saturday, can I catch up with you sometime to rip a couple of tapes? Also like to talk LMMS and music stuff.
