It's been a special few days and no mistake. [personal profile] arkady finally had a long, long awaited major dental operation on Wednesday. Her teeth are shinier! Nine of them got filled! Her jaw aches horribly! She's still dazed from the anaesthetic, which is most amusing.

This week, Freda is obsessed with robot fish, robot octopuses and robot mermaids. There's some pretty good robot fish videos on YouTube.

I am in search of USB-powered laptop speakers, as I am sick of all headphones all the time and also want some sorta shitty speakers to mix on. [personal profile] yetanotherdave and [personal profile] katieastrophe independently recommend this, though it's mono and is charged via USB rather than powered by it. Any other recommendations from personal experience, either that or something else?

On the camera front, Arkady is sorely tempted by a Lumix GF2 (a micro-four-thirds — the large sensor of an SLR without the frankly baroque mechanical flapping mirror rubbish) in the CEX that's manifested in the local shopping centre. Even though this means we'll be broke forever as she starts smoking the serious lens crack. Just because more than one company makes 4/3 lenses doesn't mean you won't be hocking your cat to buy them. Anyway, I might inherit the Lumix FH-20, which is actually a nice little thing. Still interested in an MP3-playing camera; can't find a proper camera spec for the Nokia N82, even though the camera was apparently not an afterthought (and it would stick me with one of those "phone" things). Also, what are Samsung compact cameras like? Anyone?

Update: The camera in CEX was an LX-3, which is a nice compact but not a 4/3. Arkady is going to hold out for a proper replaceable-lens camera, either 4/3 or SLR.

The Geek just today dropped about US$150 on a simple 35mm prime lens. That'd buy about five bottles of local rum, or two bottles of Lagavulin these days...

I keep a pair of Logitech S-150 USB-speakers around, back from when my amp decided it needed repair. They aren't exactly brilliant, but they were cheap (10 or 15 eurobucks IIRC) and are a bit better than what's built-in to most notebooks, so I also take them for movie-watching on business trips.
