that's true - the first vibrators appeared in doctor's surgeries around the 1870s, when they were used to calm women by giving them 'hysterical release' (orgasm).

reading up in "the vibrator museum" (years ago), before the vibrator was invented the doctor performed the "hysterical release" manually.

That made me smile. Though 1 in 3 women own a vibrator?!?! Maybe 1 in 3 women that go into Ann Summers shops. Esp given its in their interests to make it look as though "everyone else has one, aren't they fun, you should have one too".
