Frances, the elderly cat (alternately charming sook and 'orrible old lady) has gone missing, presumed dead. She showed up for breakfast Tuesday and hasn't been seen since. She had an assortment of illnesses and was living on borrowed time.

I won a £100 Amazon voucher from work and spent it on rubbish (since it wasn't enough for a new netbook). Mostly homebrew kit. Freda: "Daddy, why did you get water cleaner for a paddling pool and a pump for a paddling pool?" Me: "Dunno, why would I?" Freda: ":-D"

On the 11th, I cut all my hair off — half of it quit and I've fired the rest. (Mum, you get your wish after only twenty-six years.) On good days I'm Lex Luthor, on bad ones Dave Gilmour. That's my first haircut since just before the birth of the younger teen.

How new a netbook are you after?

I'm selling an eeePC 1005HA, running Ubuntu 12.04, bought December 2009 but barely used for the last 18mo.

I had my heart set on a Dell 1018, which are circa a hundred quid on eBay, the attraction being we have a pile of Dell chargers already (essential infrastructure). Does the Asus work off a Dell charger perchance?

Actually paying cash (rather than Amazon money that can't be used for e.g. food) for a netbook is queued after getting arkady new glasses.

She can just about say "palaeontologist", but usually sticks to "dinosaur scientist". A note on the value of role models: she has this book, which has little cartoons of palaeontologists amongst the dinosaurs, and she is delighted some of them are female. "I like the girl scientist!"

A proposal to protect the children unspecified not-yet-readers from untoward imagery on Wikipedia, which the Wikimedia Board attempted to mandate. German Wikipedia nearly got up and left over the issue: there's no way anyone can think of to do a centralised system neutrally. I don't know of a decent synopsis of the whole clusterfuck.
