This Saturday (December 7th) at 1pm, I will be attending a demonstration against the 68 Tottenham Court Road (right next to Goodge St tube) office of the Church of Scientology. More details here.

I haven't bothered with this sort of thing since early 1998, and haven't updated my page on the subject since late 2000. But since I'm here for it, I expect it'll be suitably entertaining and a good and proper way to spend a Saturday afternoon. Also, I don't have to bother organising it myself.

• Why bother at all?

I tried to find out about anti-Co$ activity in the UK a few months ago, and didn't find anything active at all - I mailed one person who'd been involved in setting up such demos, and the mail bounced. Are things starting up again now?

They were all over Edinburgh this summer...

For the UK, Dave Bird is the main guy to contact. UK stuff tends to happen every couple of months, but you need to keep an eye on alt.religion.scientology, a newsgroup which gives new meaning to 'high volume'. Contact Dave and say I sent you.

Note that the CoS bookshop in Poole shut down in the face of just a few quiet, well-mannered people with signs.

The part where the CoS terrorized my parents' hometown kinda undermined any sympathy I might have had for them.

(Sheridan, Oregon, population of roughly 500, home of The Delphian School, a fairly major CoS training facility of some sort. Said terrorization included a variety of petty crimes and abuses aimed at getting as many locals to sell their property and move out, leaving the town to the CoS.)

I go past that shop every day. When I first started working in Bloomsbury, I couldn't believe that there actually was a scientology place in the area. I guess it's to catch any vulnerable U of London students.

Being a critic of Scientology gets the chyx and makes you the life of the party. Just tell 'em the story of Xenu and the parable of the clams. Remember to keep a straight face - this is SERIOUS RELIGIOUS SCRIPTURE and not something to be made fun of. We must respect religions just for being religions.
