I have set up GPG at long last. I have a PRIVATE KEY! I am CYPHERPUNK-ENABLED! I can ENCRYPT my IMPORTANT COMMUNICATIONS! (Never mind that most are broadcast material.) The MAN can't TOUCH ME ANY MORE! (Regulation of Investigatory Powers act notwithstanding.) I will put a link to said key here when I have more of a clue what I'm doing. Nevertheless, it should go a treat with my RSA Security "It's Only An Algorithm" T-shirt - the difference between a wearable munition and an 'oh-fuck-we've-lost-our-patent' marketing exercise also apparently being ten years.

I am very impressed by how easy it is to set up gpg with mutt (the command-line mail client of choice for those not geeky enough to use emacs or mh). It goes something like this:

  1. Set up gpg and make yourself a key.
  2. That's it. mutt can tell there's gpg and a key there. It Just Works.

I was supposed to go to the party at Kake's this evening - my plan being to leave work at six, get home at seven, leave again around eight and arrive around nine-thirty, ready to leave tomorrow morning and spend my Saturday imitating a headless chook. This, however, assumes a functioning public transport system. (Travelling anywhere at all in London is enough like wading through treacle when everything is working properly.) Please pass on my apologies and sloppy kisses to all.

ObSNOW!!!: This morning, [livejournal.com profile] ewtikins made a snow angel in the back yard.

Snow angel (left), Ewt (right). Wish I'd gotten the shot of her making it. I think she's missing some things about Canada. Her entry has the snow angel outlined.

I'm pretty sure there's some references in Haujobb's Solution for a small planet, but that's '98, so somewhat after the time period you're looking for. Plus it doesn't screeching guitars or distorted voices. But there is a saxophone in one track?

Dealing with encrypting/signing all outgoing mail is made way easier when one uses tools like kuvert ...

kuvert automatically signs and/or encrypts outgoing mail using the PGP/MIME standard (rfc2015),
based on the availability of the recipient's key in your keyring. It does not store passphrases on disk,
but keeps them in memory; if available, it prefers to store passphrases with quintuple-agent.
It works as a wrapper around your MTA.
It may've been hard, but az made it easier.

don't forget to remind the minions to

3. self-sign the key.
4. get it onto the public keyservers like pgp.mit.edu.
5. ask correspondents for their fingerprints, grab a fresh copy of the keys, verify the prints, and sign their keys and put them *back* on the keyservers.

Also, for Winderz, I've been using Windows Privacy Tray. It's small and stays handy.

Ah, you remind me to (re) set up Winders PGP and Eudora. And then PGP/GPG and Kmail. (3.1 + BSD 5 on the disposable box @ work. The rollneck jumpered 'blogger [ a type I identified in my one piece for WiReD ] in me covets a TiBook. The BOfH goes 'Fuck it. Previous mentioned combination works damn well and it's Not Fucking Linux. Job On.' ... The trannie goes 'I'm not wearing that in the office...'

I got that set up a bit ago, but need to discipline myself into using it. Actually, I hardle send any email, so if I did, I'd have to read the mutt docs to find out how to do it again.
I also keep meaning to get some people to sign my key, but again, it's on the to-do list...

"those not geeky enough to use emacs"... this means I am geekier than you. How remarkable.

EWT has obviously not quite got the idea - W. hid indoors from the filthy stuff as I did, complaining that moving here ought to have avoided it.
