Yesterday was [personal profile] nyecamden's birthday, so several of us went to Indian Veg in Angel. You fill your own plate, gather your own drinks and pay at the end. The walls are covered in vegetarian propaganda. It reminded me of eating at the Hare Krishnas in my dissolute student bum youth. We were particularly enamoured with the misplaced comma which said that "pink" was just the thing for the prostate. Nye got a smugness photo of me on one side and the luscious [personal profile] inspirewithhope on the other.

Today I have been an inert amoebalike blob, modulo the considerable demands of a toddler. As ever.

Michael Moorcock is not a fan of Tolkien.

I was about to write, "Yes, he wrote a famous essay many years ago in Wizardry and Wild Romance comparing it to Winnie The Pooh".

Then I clicked the link.

Isn't Moorcock suggesting Tolkein's prose needs some work slightly ridiculous? The language he uses in the Elric books is hilariously overblown.

In the earlier Elric books Moorcock was eighteen when he wrote them.

When Moorcock tries to write (Mother London for example) he writes damn well. Something you certainly can't say about Tolkein who wouldn't get a gig writing advertising for a local paper.

Michael Moorcock is not a fan of Tolkien.
That news pre-dates "the Internet". It even says so at the top.
Can that really be news to people. His essay is (in)famous.

Yes -- I think I first read that essay when I was eighteen. Mind you I'd independently come to the conclusion that J R R T couldn't write for shit. :-)

I had the same opinion of both men when I was 14.
Tolkien got an upgrade. Moorcock I am yet to re-investigate.

For pure writing Mother London is probably his best.

Which, naturally, is not one of the ones I own.
(Yes, I pre-fetch books in hope).
I have Castle Brass, Dancers and the end of Time and the Elric books from memory. And some short stories.

I really quite like Dancers -- the complete power and decadence of the society caught my imagination. Hawkmoon/Castle Brass is fun in a completely mental kind of way.

I've read the books precisely once and don't intend to ever again.
Including The Simarillion?

God no. The three LotR books only, and not the Appendix. I certainly have no intention of venturing into reheated offcuts prepared by Chris Tolkien and Kevin J. Anderson.

In think Mr Anderson was resurrecting Mr Herbert.
I read one of *those* books. I did not read any others,

I have a number of the Chris "Reanimator" Tolkien books.
In case.
Simarillion and the appendix rocked. YMMV.

I love Indian Veg! There's lots of good vegetarian Indian places here in Tooting too - I should check some of them out sometime. Mmm, dosa.
