Camera: How profoundly annoying.

The good news is the arrival this morning of the new USB CompactFlash reader and 256MB CF card from Crucial. I should no longer need to use ewtikins' Windows box to talk to the camera, and can have a go at recovering the February B-Movie photos by hand myself.

The bad news is that the camera is not working - all buttons on the back, except the power and zoom, are unresponsive, and if you switch it to shooting mode it will take shots as fast as it can all by itself. This happened for a few hours last Saturday, but now appears to be a permanent condition. Needless to say, its timing is impeccable. The shop say Canon's warranty turnaround is typically two to three weeks. So I'll probably hold onto it until Whitby - in the hope of it coming good, even for a while - then send it back.

I suppose it'll give me time to catch up on the backlog.

Have you tried taking it into a store to see if they can see anything/do anything (the only people I can think off the top of my head are http://www.jessops.co.uk no idea if they can, but it might be worht a try.

You have to remember that microminiaturised consumer electronics are built of electronic cheese and string - usually a collection of custom chips on a PCB that's actually as thick as an overhead transparency and bent to fit the tiny space. That is to say, all these toys are essentially disposable. The drive to quality goes as far as outliving the warranty period and preserving the manufacturer's good name.

Since it's intermittent, the problem is a dodgy contact of some sort. Definitely one for the service centre to find and fix/replace - I would suspect a bad joint or cracked PCB trace (these things tend to have only a small number of actual wires) though it could be anything.

And I am very sure they can tell if the customer has tried to open the thing, instantly voiding the warranty :-)

Hmm... Morgan's currently have these extremely tasty looking fuji SLR-like cameras in stock.

If i wasn't flat broke, and had oodles of money to throw around, I'd spend 500 quid on one of those :D

Your camera does seem to be somewhat temperamental...but on the other hand, it's righted itself in the past often as not, so fingers crossed it'll behave itself for Whitby.

Given that you've had no end of trouble since you got it, is there no chance that instead of faffing around with repairs they'll give you a replacement?

As per the above comment, replacement of all or part is the most likely 'repair'.
