Saturday night was Dead and Buried at the Korsan Bar in Hoxton. Very nice venue, though not easy to find. Pics here. The F20 was utterly defeated by the blackness of the post-punk and I had to resort to flash; clearly I need an F200EXR, with its frankly insane ISO 12800, as soon as is humanly feasible. A snip at under 200 quid now! Oh well.

Big news is that [personal profile] redcountess is extending her Melbourne visit, to fix up her mum's house, spend time with friends she hasn't seen in twenty years and generally blow off steam. Please give her calls and emails and take her to pubs and stuff. Her return requires me getting a job to pay for the ticket ... we'll call that an incentive!

Freda's speech continues developing. Today she said a sentence! "Plane gone away." The speech therapy should come through by the time she gets her first in English. She can also now catch a thrown ball! We do finally have a dental hospital appointment for her and won't have to wait until she's three.

The job sucking continues apace. Interviews this week, including one courtesy a lead from [livejournal.com profile] hirez, who has earned many a *pint*.

Jolly nice date on Monday afternoon and evening with [livejournal.com profile] nyecamden. We visited Fettered Pleasures, a business of unquestionable decency and wholesomeness. I didn't find anything that made me go "ooh" (though they do stock Magnum condoms, only place I've found in London that does), but I do deeply approve of their existence and consider that they make the world a better place.

I plan to go out this Saturday night, to Vagabonds. I am by definition poor at present. Who can spare me a pint? (big drunk puppy dog eyes)

I run Windows; which kind am I?

(hint: the kind that (a) needs photoshop and (b) can't stand OSX)

Suspect that puts us both into the unmentioned 4th category - "clueful enough to be trusted with it". (I am writing this on my Dell laptop which is only running WinXP purely because it came to me with PS already installed, and GIMP quite frankly just doesn't cut it as a replacement.)

I love hearing horror stories of Mac owners who have to take their baby to the shop to get some essential part replaced that'd cost half as much to replace were it not a Mac.

Plenty of other sex shops sell Magnums. Expectations near Old Street certainly do, I've bought them there before.

We shall have to have a tour of sex shops when you're wearing comfortable footwear :-)

I use windows because I fit into option 2. I also think there's another option, which I also fall into - those that really don't have the time or inclination to learn Linux because all they use the computer for is word processing, internet and storing photos they take of the cat, but sort of feel they ought to because they know Windows is so unstable but also because they are friends with/dating/married to/ know someone who does - and feel geekly inferior.

Because I'm aware of the risk though, I write everything down on a peice of paper - but don't actually write the word, just trigger words, in case my memory fails me.

If people are so thick as to put thier bank details and passwords in a word document (and probably name it "passwords and other details" rather than "list of things I want from Amazon" etc) what do they expect?

My friend renamed a file on her desktop from "naked photos" to "pictures from mum's birthday" and the computer repair man didn't even open it ;p

Physical access to ANY machine poses a danger. Anyone competent could browse Windows, Linux, or Mac filesystems with physical access.

I take more offense in the article here:
Only one shop performed flawlessly. Pix 4 in Shepherds Bush took its time to carefully examine our machine while we waited. The staff promptly discovered the loose chip, popped it back into place and told us with a smile there would be no charge.

Is it any wonder that many repair shops in business are crooked/questionable when the assumption exists that 'performing flawlessly' means doing your job (what must have been at least a quarter to a half hour of labor) for free?

The worry of PC repair shops is one reason I try to stick with keeping my stuff on a desktop, and repairing bits myself. I also try to keep increasingly amounts of material encrypted these days - though that's more out of fear that my parents may stumble into my photos folder when visiting, as opposed to PC repair places (a side effect of my parents becoming more computer experienced is that hiding folders in obscure places is less likely to be a secure method...).
