I have a proper entry of epic length to write. But in the meantime, our DSL is in fact being switched off some time today. Thanks to a fine inside contact who I will not of course name for their good work to try to avert this disaster. We're getting temporary dialup from Eclipse to cover us, and will probably go back to them or to Zen for the DSL. See you on the other side.

Those of you on my list are welcome to text or call me (and you're all welcome to leave your number).

I'm listening to New Order Substance, using the laptop as an oversized Walkman. Goddamn they sucked when they tried doing the funky New York dance act thing. "Confusion", "Shellshocked" and particularly "State Of The Nation", for which there is no hole deep enough. And this is the long version.

We had DSL until about 9:30pm. It was like we were in a one-room Goodies episode, WAITING FOR THE END! The dialup was arranged in time, though, so I reassembled the PC, found the phone cable (after only one call to [livejournal.com profile] arkady to check I hadn't lent it to her), rejigged the house network and rediscovered that trying to solve a problem on Windows is much less time-efficient than simply rebooting. My net connection now matches the speed of my laptop.

We also tried a new USB 2.0 card in both the Mac and [livejournal.com profile] redcountess' PC, establishing that the card is fine (though it doesn't fit properly) and so the 2.5" disk or the disk enclosure is not working, established the same when we applied external power to the enclosure and found the old 2.5" disk so we can test further by swapping that in. And Arnie the cat (Six-Dinner Sid) came in for a cuddle.

I think the unemployed ennui has hit. I have applied for jobs last night and this lunchtime, I have sat around on IRC, I have read Slashdot, we have this much money left. It's nice to curl up to Liz all day, though.

It's been a highly productive day but it doesn't feel like one.
