I may have foolishly muttered something about having nearly finished gadgeting up. There is a computer store in Walthamstow that has IBM 18" flat panels (1280×1024, equivalent to a 21" CRT) with two DVI inputs (and a VGA adapter cable) for £85. I forget the name, but it's on Hoe Street just down from the corner with Forest Road (just near the Bell). [livejournal.com profile] d_floorlandmine just swung by there in the Minebringer and got two for himself, one for [livejournal.com profile] wechsler and one for me.

They're ex-J.P. Morgan. Mine's a bit beat-up (there's light patches on the screen, probably from someone picking it up with their fingers on it), but will do just fine for my desktop. If you could do with a flat panel, they're well worth a spin. All I need now is a video card that will do 1280×1024 ... it's currently displaying to a 1024×768 bit in the middle of the screen!

So my 21" Sun monitor is now looking for a good home. First to come and get it, it's yours. It weighs 35kg, so you're going to need a car or cab.

We are now a CRT-free household, on our computers at least. Liz is looking to get a TV adapter for her laptop, so we might free ourselves of that one too ...

Update: The Sun 21" CRT does have the VGA adapter as well as the 13W3 Sun connector, so will fit any PC, any Sun and most Macs!

£85!! Wow. I wish I'd read this earlier when the place was still open...I love flat screens. We've got one but I'd like to get another one for the computer we have upstairs.

I'll second the "gah - why didn't you post this earlier!" ... oh well ...

I have two sun monitors currently (19" and 17") so a third one would not be good (I say to myself ...)

except that I only have two machines with sun 10D3 connectors, so they both already have uses ... I've never managed to find a convertor (otherwise I might seriously head over to get it if I thought I could life it; last time I tried lifting a 21" monitor I failed ...)

aarrgghhh!!!! Why did you have to tell me that!!!

grrr .... hmmmn .... damn ....

I have six monitors in my room already (and two more above the fridge in the hall) - I'm not sure I could justify another! On the other hand *if* I was able to get it up the stairs it might let me replace the tv ... how heavy / outside dimensions is it?

(I don't believe I just asked that ...)

that's five and a half stone! eep! I'm fairly sure I've had girlfriends who only weighed that! (and no, I would never make love to a monitor no matter *how* good it was ;-P

(It wouldn't fit through my doors either, so far as I can work out ...)

I weighed that when I was at secondary school. The lowest I've dropped to in adulthood has been 45kg. At the moment I think I'm about the 55kg mark (don't know for certain as I don't have a set of scales and I haven't weighed myself in over a year).

I did once work in a chilled goods warehouse where I had to chuck 40kg cheeses around all night. Certainly kept me very fit, and you should have seen the muscle definition in my arms....

rational thought (possibly induced by end of large glass of red wine and otherwise boredom) has resulted in the conclusion that a 21" Sun monitor would be certainly very lovely, but way too big to get up stairs / throught the entrance to my flat / find a space within my domain.

A flat-screen for £85 however is entirely another matter, and I am extremely inclined to acquire one. What time/day would they be likely to be open next do you think? (as although your offer is most gracious I wouldn't like to stretch your available cashflow ...)

They had three left when Simon and I left the shop. The owner did look slightly surprised that we wanted four of them.

I have asked Tex and his eyes lit up. :) If you could do that, it would be great and we'll come and pick it up and sort the money out asap. Thanks honey!

Ooh, i would be very interested in an 18" flat screen for 85 quid. Not so much on a 35 kg CRT, sori... :P

If there's a third would you pick one up for me please?

Just the excuse for me to come visit Walthamstow again after I get back from Canada, too.

I'm not objecting, myself; as Diva and Liz acquire gadets the trickle-down effect means I've been a beneficiary of their good fortune too. There's no way I could have afforded a Mac G3 myself with the state of my finances, for example.

It is quite bemusing to watch, mind you. :-)

*grin*

But it's so much fun finding obscure or shiny tech which you can use.

There's a reason we own a 4'6" rack and a UPS which runs half our computer room for /at least/ an hour. My dad swiped it out of skips at work (with permission) and they were going to be otherwise destroyed.

Ahh one of the few things I miss about London is my ability to pick up free Sun stuff... and cheap stuff like those monitors.
