Compaq laptop bits needed.
Dec. 27th, 2005 12:59 amIn giving
narnee the old M300 (PII-333MHz, 11" screen, 800×600), we probably need some bits for it and my Evo N410c:
- Compaq battery — required. Ideally the funky M300 cylinder battery (only good for that model!), or failing that the standard Compaq laptop battery that slots into the base station. (M300 cylinder batteries are £60 new, £40-45 on eBay or US$70 exchange, assuming Customs don't gouge me.)
- Compaq CD or DVD drive, that similarly slots into the base station.
- Compaq power adapter, 18.5-19 volts. (Mine is currently running on the Dell adapter, which is the right voltage but has a not-quite-right plug which falls out far too readily.)
Also, if anyone has a spare 11b wifi access point, she could really do with one of those — the M300 has no Ethernet but a wifi card that works fine (with some kicking) in Ubuntu, but Sahra has no wifi point at home!
A line on any of the above cheap, free or in exchange for as yet unspecified goods, services or alcohol would be most welcomed, please!
Mail almost back on velvet. We're currently waiting for
hawkeviper to return and untar the mail directories, then we can get the MX repointed ...

Date: 2005-12-27 01:25 am (UTC)I should also see if IBM bits are slot-compatible. I really doubt it, but what sort of junkpile collector am I if I don't try. Really.

Date: 2005-12-27 03:32 am (UTC)in the bargain bins they had a returned linksys wifi b AP for £15, but it was missing arials (easy to get, standard connector), and psu (5v easy to get).
I've got two PSUs for my compaq presario 1200xl222 don't know if the M300 uses the same?
I really need to replace my presario, celerons are shite... pismo sounds a good bet for a replacement..

Date: 2005-12-27 01:51 pm (UTC)My Evo was just over £200 and is a PIII-1GHz. Not a bad box at all, particularly after I upped it to 768MB.

Date: 2005-12-27 02:33 pm (UTC)It is the 800x600 resolution that is its weak point however. I'm so used to 1600x1200!

Date: 2005-12-27 03:32 pm (UTC)When I find the PSU I'll let you know. The two are not the same but both work fine with my presario 1200.
Now if I could just get a laptop with a 1600x1200 screen....

Date: 2005-12-27 09:26 pm (UTC)My 1200 is bad enough weight wise.
Weight wise I like Nat's fujitsu-seimens amilo or whatever it is. Only bit I don't like is the 1024x768 resolution on the screen.
I'm too fussy I guess, what with having a big 21" CRT on my desk for the last 18 months, though that needs replacing really as the tube isn't quite as good as it once was.

Date: 2005-12-29 06:07 am (UTC)OMG, LOL, we have, like, so much in common. I too have an old PII-333MHz laptop that needs a battery. Mine's a Toshiba Techra 8000 -- fairly usable still, really -- 256MB RAM, 40GB HD, 1024x768. I'm probably going to add a bluetooth GPS to it and make it a carPC/navigation/MP3 player/wardriving box. Rather than pay $50 for a new battery, maybe I'll just get an DC adapter for the car cigarette lighter.
Anyway, I do have, I believe, a 64MB SO DIMM SDRAM 3.3V 144 pin left over from a memory upgrade if you could use it.
