I do not have a third of a ton of vinyl records. I have just under half a ton of vinyl records. 440kg of records and other personal effects are sitting on a pallet in a warehouse in Felixstowe, accumulating assorted because-we-can charges. My aunt in Amersham has offered to put them up for me, but woohoo! She's moving house in early June, about the same time we plan to! Tomorrow I call self-storage places around Walthamstow and then try to work out which is a less worse idea.

I could also do with ideas on getting it from Felixstowe to either Amersham or Walthamstow ... my aunt's Mondeo is unlikely to be suited to the task.

In any case, *pint*s by the cartonload to [livejournal.com profile] ozjester for having stored the damned things so long and for his superlative and/or lucky choice of shipping company such that they got here intact. One day soon ... I will play my vinyl again.

Oh, and Saint Chav has been considerably extended by the efforts of [livejournal.com profile] abigailb. I've also added a 17th century lithograph of St. Chav's Cathedral in Lakeside, Essex.

"Least bad plan" is probably to source a rental white van, possibly with the help of a helpful aunt (or other driverlicnesehaver in the environment), then drive to either place, load the thing up and then drive it to Walthamstow. Unless it collides with something else, I might as well volunteer my services as (one)(un-)loader, given it doesn't collide with something nasty, like on-callness.

what height pallet though? A current DFord Transit wil, iirc take a pallet if they can lift it on a fork into the back (doesn't need to be emptied the same way) but the height will matter, likewise putting that much weight on a back axle might be an issue ...

I have a fork lift license. But no fork lift. And I doubt the depot in Felixstowe will be too enamoured of the idea of letting me borrow one. ;-)

not to drive it all the way to London, anyway ;-P

(vW - who has driven a forklift but not got a licence for it)

Do you have a fork lift? Or a pallet truck and an LGV with a powered lip at teh back?

If the answer to both of those are "no", it cannot possibly be left undisturbed through the loading process. Simple as that.

If it'd been a wee bit less than 440 kg (say, 100 kg), it could, possibly, have been done with enough people and some rope (build a carry-sling with at least 4, ideally 6-8 carry positions, get a ramp, lift and walk it in and out). But at 440 kg, there is probably not enough room (I am thinking a standard "B" or "EUR" pallet here) to do that and you'd end up with some seriously fucked-up spines.

Wait until the effects of global warming cause the Gulf Stream to stop and we have another ice age, then you can put it on a really big sled and get 10,000 small yappy dogs to pull it to Walthamstow.

I may never think of smoked whitefish again in quite the same way.

Dunno if I should now go wash my brane out in HCl or yours.

Estimate 5 LPs per kilo (it's probably on the lower end, but...).

As I understand it, there's something like 32 crates of LPs. I have no idea how many LPs per crate, but we're talking easily into the thousands.

Congrats! It must be nice knowing that they're slowly finding their way back to you. I'm sure you'll solve the transport problem: perhaps notices up at the newsagent for cheap removalists? Two men, a big truck and a bit of time should sort it.

You are most welcome! They have lived at two houses and have been moved four times. Glad they arrived safe. :)

That's only in Perth, in Melbourne they lived in six houses and were moved five times before being shipped to Perth!
