Can't sleep for coughing, so
arkady and I are up geeking. I just tripped over these pages:
- Wikipedia:Requested pictures
- Category:Wikipedia requested images
- Commons:Picture requests
- Category:Wikipedia requested photographs
- Category:Wikipedia requested photographs in Australia
- Category:Wikipedia requested photographs in the United Kingdom
I can hardly believe we don't have a good photo of deep-fried pizza.
The first list is worth a look over by all of you. e.g. the Anne Frank Tree in Amsterdam, which is due to be cut down soon.
With-permission images are deprecated (much to
secretlondon's past annoyance); we need actual free-content images that anyone can reuse without asking. That is: you take the photo and licence it to the world suitably. (I tend to use PD-self for stuff I really don't give a hoot about [e.g. pictures of technical things] and copyleft-self with GFDL and CC-by-sa for stuff that has some creativity involved. Of course, there's the Uncyclopedia Have A Fucking Field Day licence.) If that seems stupidly complicated, please ask in a comment.

Date: 2006-12-15 08:03 am (UTC)There's a non-Wikipedia related picture I've been meaning to take for you for years (and should have done before I moved as it's near where I used to live). One day I'll manage, honestly!

Date: 2006-12-15 08:22 am (UTC)There's endless anality around naming conventions. Assume it'll end up somewhere it probably belongs and leave it to someone much more pedantic than yourself with much less of a life to fix.
As for names of photos, no restrictions, although leaving it at the name out the camera will get your name cursed by millions - I usually use something like subject and date.jpg.

I put a note on the page requesting to say that I was going to upload, but it didn't log my username... or does it do that, just not for me? I don't want to phuck up some freaky nerd protocol :-p

Date: 2006-12-15 08:55 am (UTC)Wikipedia is made of nerd protocol. It's like a huge Asperger's inducing field.

Date: 2006-12-15 03:55 pm (UTC)Copyright violation is a perennial pain in the arse on Wikipedia/Wikimedia, but we do prefer to make damn sure things are done properly. Which is why the apparent nerdy bureaucracy and the strong preference for a proper free-content licence and so forth. Which is why I tend to go for a simple "use my stuff" ;-)

Date: 2006-12-15 06:39 pm (UTC)I am aghast. And yet strangely intrigued. And left wondering if there is anything edible that is not deep-fried in Scotland?

Date: 2006-12-15 07:51 pm (UTC)The miracle of Usenet neglected to inform me that the Scots battered their candy bars before deep frying them. I spoiled more than a quart of cooking oil by my experiment, and it took several days to get all of the melted chocolate off the fry basket.
