Can't sleep for coughing, so [livejournal.com profile] arkady and I are up geeking. I just tripped over these pages:

I can hardly believe we don't have a good photo of deep-fried pizza.

The first list is worth a look over by all of you. e.g. the Anne Frank Tree in Amsterdam, which is due to be cut down soon.

With-permission images are deprecated (much to [livejournal.com profile] secretlondon's past annoyance); we need actual free-content images that anyone can reuse without asking. That is: you take the photo and licence it to the world suitably. (I tend to use PD-self for stuff I really don't give a hoot about [e.g. pictures of technical things] and copyleft-self with GFDL and CC-by-sa for stuff that has some creativity involved. Of course, there's the Uncyclopedia Have A Fucking Field Day licence.) If that seems stupidly complicated, please ask in a comment.

So what's the procedure for naming pages for people, their names vs. their famous nicknames? Pelé vs. Edson Arantes do Nascimento is a gimme, but the one i ran into recently was Zaza Pachulia vs Zaur Pachulia. The latter didn't exist, so i moved Zaza to Zaur, which left behind a redirect. I found in my box a message from a young Georgian fan of Zaza's asking me to move it back. I told him he could do it himself.

not from what i've seen from a very brief check. chosen or given names should always be the convention where it is the better known of the names.

I have a silver Gameboy Advance SP - not the white one requested (I think). I can still take a picture of it when I run into it (it's somewhere in the mess from moving currently). I can also poke people I know in Amsterdam about the Anne Frank Tree.

There's a non-Wikipedia related picture I've been meaning to take for you for years (and should have done before I moved as it's near where I used to live). One day I'll manage, honestly!

Ooh, I can do a couple of those. I'll ask Churchill for their coat of arms and Earth Sciences if they mind me taking a photo of some greenockite.

Richard found one or two of his own photos of old computers up on wikipedia without his knowledge or consent a while ago, but he might be up for trying to get a shot of Deep Fried Pizza if he's not too annoyed about it lately.

Yeah, there's a lot of users on Wikipedia that think any old photo is fair game - I once had a run in with somebody using images of Keith Richards from his own website, FFS!

Please tell Richard it would be very much appreciated by the community if he would reconsider giving licence to the offending photos.

i think he did that, actually. :) commented it and said - "those are mine, and it's polite to ask, but please go ahead" or something to that effect.

deep-fried pizza

I am aghast. And yet strangely intrigued. And left wondering if there is anything edible that is not deep-fried in Scotland?

When, thanks to the miracle of Usenet, I heard about the Scottish invention of the deep fried Mars bar, I decided to try to create the confection, mostly out of curiosity as to how it worked.

The miracle of Usenet neglected to inform me that the Scots battered their candy bars before deep frying them. I spoiled more than a quart of cooking oil by my experiment, and it took several days to get all of the melted chocolate off the fry basket.
