Re "About bloody time", in but a few days you will look back upon this morning and think about how peaceful it was, then realise that it will be at least eighteen years before it is so peaceful again ;-P

I saw that doc, and I really really want to poke the writer of that article about a few things that he's gotten factually incorrect.

Personally, I think Sweeney gave a good account of himself and behaved pretty decently, since there's a couple of times when I would have just headbutted the obnoxious, threatening Scientologist nut-job who kept hounding him, had I been in his shoes.

Serious question: why wasn't induction an option? Do they only really do that with mega-late babies?

Induction is not an option for a number of reasons:

1) Because according to WHO, "full-term" is defined as anywhere between 37-42 weeks.
2) Because I have an extreme phobia of needles which means the only method of induction possible is prostin (an application of prostaglandin gel or pessary). If that had failed, an oxytocin drip would not be possible so it would be straight to c-section under general anaesthetic, putting me out with gas. The attitude of the registrars was that they would book me in for the c-section anyway because they expected the prostin to fail.
3) Because they were pushing for an induction on the basis of a suspected hindwater leak which they refused to distinguish from a full-on rupture of membranes ("waters breaking"); an ultrasound on Wednesday confirmed that my waters were intact and therefore no reason for an induction. If they'd performed an ultrasound on Saturday I would have been spared 5 days of stress and anxiety which was effectively causing labour to stall completely.

Babies come when they are ready; the birth process is triggered by hormones released by the baby when it is ready to be born. If labour doesn't start spontaneously, there's usually a damned good reason for it. There is no such thing as a baby that refuses to be born - but far too many cases of doctors railroading women into unwanted inductions and interventions because the woman isn't "performing" to their timetable.
