Twenty years I've been following this alternative music malarkey[1]. And it was only today that I finally heard a John Peel show!

Needless to say, I'm a convert. And it was a religious experience.

Peel by RealAudio:

The above addresses contain that week's show for one week after broadcast. Streaming-only for copyright reasons, unfortunately. Pretty much broadband-only, though you can get a murky version at 11kbps through a modem if that's all you have.

Until the Ogg streams start again, you'll have to sully your system with RealSpam. Though it can almost be beaten into behaving itself if you do the custom install and also check preferences after it's installed.

So who failed to make this man Program Director on 6 Music?

You've only just heard a Peel show? What a deprived teenagehood you had! I never knew just how lucky I was to grow up here till now!

Ta for those links, I always end up missing his shows. I shall bookmark that lot.

He's one of my all time heroes that's for sure, but I certainly didn't know he was as fondly thought of abroad.

I used to feel very guilty for wishing Peel was my dad. :}

John Peel still makes me think about being 15 and in my bedroom. I wonder how many other people in the UK have the same fond memories..!

well, to be fair, in Australia we had Billy Purnell and Gaby from the RRR write-in request show...they were the highlights of *my* teenage years. But I do remember reading the English music press and noting how much respect Peel got, and I have one of the John Peel Sessions on vinyl (the Hardcore Holocaust one)

I'm listening to Thursday''s now, and notably it has a classic Peelie wrong-speed moment. "I'll just put it down to 33 1/3 - though it actually sounds fine to me at the other . . ."

On a really good evening he does that, realises it sounds wrong, sees that no speed is mentioned, changes speed, and at the end says that it sounds no more normal and can whoever made it please get in touch and tell him how fast to play it?

Fantastic. Notably the list of bands that he's to blame for breaking extends into the mainstream as far as Dire Straits

You got the urls then? Some sort of response to the newsgroup that someone had provided you with the information you require would not have gone amiss.

The Melbourne internat. film festival this year had a doco he made called "Teenage Kicks: The Story Of The Undertones", was a fascinating thing to watch. The Peel Sessions Billy Bragg CD I have is pretty good as well. If only I could listen to those streams at work.. :/
