ARGH!

The mattress has arrived, at half past six this morning (which no doubt is "between 7am and 2pm" as promised). Except that it's not a 180cm x 200cm mattress. No, it's two 90cm x 200cm mattresses sold as a unit. Despite no word of this small detail being mentioned in the catalogue or visible on the showroom floor.

Now, I can return this (and probably make them eat the delivery charge if I try hard enough), and have no bed by Friday. Or I can put up with this fucking crap object. Fuck.

Update, 2:20pm: Just called to whine. They took all details (including that I want the delivery refunded) and said I will receive a call back from the store within 72 hours, whereupon I can argue further. I'd rather the lump of cash now, but this way will cause them slightly more pain, which is of course more educational.

You're just not having much luck with buying shit this month, are you?

If you return it, you'll be cranky for a few days.
If you put up with said crap object, you'll be cranky until you lob the damn thing out the window.

I'm thinking a few days of cranky is the better way to go.

Yeah, I know. The return process will just be such a fucking PITA. And I'm wondering if I in fact have the cash on hand to get something else quickly. Assuming I can find something else quickly.

Although now I know to ask the important question before handing over the bucks.

heh. well, don't fell too bad. my mattress promised "no later than three pm, and most likely this morning!" did not actually arrive until four-thirty. and they didn't even take the old one. feh.


if you decide not to raise a stink, a mattress pad will cover the gap nicely and prolong the life of your brand new crap mattress. a bit of nonsticky carpet tack between boxspring and mattress will keep them from sliding out of place.

I reckon you should return it and spend today on the internet/phone looking for someone who'll be able to deliver this evening. I'm not sure where you live, but if you look for an independant shop close to your house they may well be able to deliver almost instantly if you stress that it is an issue.

Or go to Argos - buy one over the counter, and get a frined to pick it up for you. They're cheap there too..

That's a first - I don't believe I've ever had something delivered earlier than the stated time. Sitting in the house for hours is usually how it works. The thought of sitting at home waiting for deliveries has stopped me from buying any furniture lately.

Well, I did ask them to put a note to make the delivery as early as possible. So I can't fault them on the delivery itself :-)

I say phone them, explain that they've delivered the wrong thing, quote tradings standards at them, and tell them you expect them to come and take away the twin mattresses and bring you the double mattress you ordered, by 2pm, as promised. And then quote some more trading standards stuff if they kick off.Failing that, kill 'em all, hide the bodies.

It's definitely the thing they actually sell as a 'double mattress'. So they don't have a non-lame item to pull out of their hats.

I will (hopefully) get a lift out of my housemate, take it back and make a terrible fuss.

IKEA suck

If I'd known in advance you were planning to buy a bed from IKEA I'd have warned you off. Ther bed design is so bloody complicated they feel the need for an explanation in the catalogue, maybe it's been left out recently. Unfortunately yes, you do have to have two singles, and you have to buy one of their mattress pads to go over it to cover the join. AFAIK you need to buy a pad to go over even a single mattress, the whole system is different from standard British beds. You then have to buy their bedding for eternity since it's a nonstandard size and fitted sheets from any other shop won't fit.

Needless to say the catalogue doesn't explain it in quite those terms, the sheer bloody awkwardness of the whole bed-buying process is swamped with rave reviews about the fantastic quality of the product. I'm afraid if you want an Ikea bed you'll have to go along with their way of doing things.
