Got the nice flat in Walthamstow we wanted!

(So damn, blast and bugger with hot pokers the wastes of skin we dealt with on Saturday ...)

Currently negotiating move with owner (who is moving out over the next few days) with a view to getting in there on Saturday and/or Sunday.

So. I would like your tips on moving. Tell me all about moving a small but unwieldy quantity of stuff across Lahndahn.

(Not much stuff, but a few items - 6'×6'6" mattress, 28" telly, stand for telly - are annoyingly unwieldy. So it's probably van time. Also, I think my licence is valid here, but I have no experience of driving in London and consider this would not be the ideal opportunity to gain it.)

If there is a housewarming, it will be after Whitby.

We had good experience renting a van from sixt. DON'T rent from hertz. You'll want to request a "high roof" van.

Your Australian licence technically is NOT valid here as you've been here over a year, but they won't know that. Call the company in advance though as some simply won't rent to people without a UK or international driving licence, others will but charge a hefty fee. I honestly don't know what Sixt's policy is because t had his UK licence by then. (You can exchange your Oz DL for a UK one, just a matter of paperwork and filing fees -- no retests or anything, but it takes a few weeks so not ideal for this weekend.)

Congrats on the flat, hope you enjoy living there...

I am still recovering from my move at the end of 2001.My tip would be after that is to use
a removal firm. If you need boxes I have tonnes.

ISTR that Loot carries adverts for "Man with Van". Which is what you need, unless you're really into carrying mahousive TVs around yourself...

(Incidentally, apparently moving house is one of the most calorie-burning everyday activities that one can do. Who'd a thunk it?)

And I've been doing it roughly annually since 1985 except for a period of two years when I first got really ill in 1997-1999. Worst though was 2001-2002 when I moved 4 times in 12 months!

I'm so fucking tired of moving!

I started moving lots in 1986. I moved 4 times in 1990 alone. Have only moved twice in the last five years though.

I hate moving, but I hate staying in one place even more.

Rent a van with two people to do carrying. 'S not that expensive, and the easiest/cheapest way to manage with more-than-a-taxi-load of stuff.

Thanks, that would be a great help. If we hire a van would you be able to drive that instead?

I don't believe my licence covers vans, they're classed as LGV. I could manage a trailer though.

A trailer would be perfect, know anywhere around here we can hire one? Thankyou for this, we shall discuss it more with the Diva-ly one tonight :-)

If you're over 21 and you have a standard UK car licence it covers you to drive anything up to the size of a Luton van. That's a 7.5 tonne vehicle.

Oh, and if you're going to rent from Sixt, book it online - there's a substantial reduction in price. http://www.e-sixt.co.uk IIRC

Yay!! Once you move, tell me how you did it, because we'll be joining you in the Stow come May. Whereabouts eh eh? Will you be our NEIGHBOURS?

We have no idea how to move cos none of us can drive. Or know anyone who can.

Fucksticks.

Whee, congratulations!

Personally I'd hire a Transit van or similar and bribe a friend with beer to drive it - that's what I did last time (well, brother not friend). Good luck.

Just be certain to offer the van bribe deliverable *after* the driving and delivery is done.

6'x6'6" mattress, 28" telly, stand for telly

... fookin' 'evy Sun monitors ...

Suggestions on how to move:

  • Man with van (and you), or van with two men. Full-on removals firm doesn't sound necessary.
  • Mates with hired van. Mate able and willing to drive van, a significant advantage. Mates can be bribed with beer, a really good dinner party later, your eternal love and devotion (oh, hang on, hasn't someone else goet that already?), or something else.
  • Actual removal company, especially if you can find a cheap local one.

Additional points:

  • Pack everything beforehand that will fit into boxes, into reasonable-size boxes, preferably of the same size.
  • For random items, the boxes that lettuce and so on arrive in supermarkets in are ideal, because they are made to pack an item which cannot support weight on its own, so they are much stronger than (say) wine boxes which are built on the assumption that the bottles take some of the weight.
  • Most supermarkets break down their cardboard immediately the box is emptied, on the shop floor. However, if you go around near shelf-filling-time and ask nicely, they will keep boxes unbroken for you, which helps.
  • Seal all boxes that can be sealed with strong tape all round, not just a little bit on top (a real serious tape-gun is a useful purchase), because...
  • Box must remain closed and contents unbroken if box is inverted. This helps the people loading a lot.
  • Label boxes with destination location and "fragile" if unusually fragile. Label them with the contents if you have spare time and are anally-retentive.

When I last moved, I packed it all myself, then paid a local removal firm to load up a van, drive it up the road, and unload it. I obtained a significant discount on the usual rate by dint of mentioning that I work with one of their former employees. The amount of stuff I have now definitely exceeds what you can get your friends to do. However, I've been part of the van-and-friends method enough times to know it works if you get people who can pack and carry well.

Nicolai, bastard removal man in his spare time

It may not be your thing, but it would make me awfully jealous if you were to visit your local William Morris museum (http://www.lbwf.gov.uk/wmg/home.htm) (Well, okay, as far as I know it's the only one in existence). Best of all - it's free!

By the way, Congratulations for you and Liz on finding your lovenest at last. Oh, and have you made it to the British Museum yet?

Here's a scary though.

I have driven in London! In fact, all the way through London (past a bomb threat), out the other side, via Birmingham and then on to Aberdeen.

It were a fucker of a drive, sort of Melbourne to Sydney via the old Hume... yanno, crappy little A roads and even crappier little B roads.

*sigh* Those were the days.

My fave. UK driving experience: driving this fsking humungous mid 80s Toyota mafia-chrome-mobile through the itsy bitsy lanes of Aberdeen... and finding out just why I needed a convenient little lever to retract the side mirrors - cuz otherwise, I would have scraped them off, there wasn't even that much clearance!

Good luck with the move, but, and love to youse.

ravenous.
