An aerial photographer, overexposed.

If you want to buy a new compact digital camera and want something that does high ISO, most are selling snake oil. The Fuji F30/F31 is the only one that's any bloody good at all over ISO 400 — even beating the larger Canon S3 and G7. I don't plan to replace my Canon Ixus 50 (which doesn't pretend to go over ISO 400) any time soon, but oooh I'm tempted.

Pembury Tavern last night, with Freda, who slept most of the time and didn't appreciate the noise much. Nice to see people.

Miserable day today. I would like a sleep cycle, please.

And nice to meet Freda for the first time!

A deep breath of submission has begun.

You should probably note that the ISO problem is that of compact digital cameras and not of DSLR's. Some of us like using DSLR's over compact camera's and such an omission could give some of us a small heart palpitation... ;)

Yeah, interchangeable glass rocks. Oh, you meant the compact?

I do not need a new camera.

I do NOT need a new camera.

Why, these days I hardly use the one I have. And I'm in no state to be buying random semi-expensive stuff because I feel like it.

I do, as my current compact has seen too many humid Laughtons nights, had too much beer and experienced too many beer-related drop-tests.

Thanks Diva, nice timing.

I've owned, er, six Fuji digital cameras over the years. One that developed an error was fixed very promptly and efficiently by Fuji within warranty (and note that I have largely given up on trying to get warranty repairs for small electricals because so many companies are crap about it). A second, which is about six or seven years old now and has been my 10-year-old's camera for a couple of years, just developed a fault last week. Otherwise no problems. They are in many ways my default brand for digital compacts.

I'm with you on the Fuji cameras. All my digitals have been Fuji, tho' I've been tempted to try other brands from time to time. Given that the next 12 months will likely see an upgrade to a DSLR and a sidewardsgrade to a new compavt, that review will likely influence the choice of the latter.

I've always liked the picture quality from Fuji, right back to my first 2300Z, but I have had a mixed bag of reliablity with them. Tho' come to think of it, the ones that have caused me grief have tended to be the secondhand ones off eBay, rather than the bought-from-new ones I've owned.

And Fran ([livejournal.com profile] indigo_violet, my g/f) just loves her Z3 as 1) it takes great twin shot photos (flash & no flash), which is great for pubs & clubs, and 2) its pink. I'm driving a S5600, which is a bit of a halfway house - too big to be a compact, so it gets used less; and a bit modest in ability for serious photography cf a DSLR.

I walked into the camera store and said something about needing a camera that would fit in my purse for under $200. I needed it right then because I was going to be missing photo ops at the Goths on Ice social! Dude hooked me up with a Fuji FinePix A900 and a 1 gig card. I must say that it served me well all weekend and I'm greatly looking forward to going out and playing with photography before making a larger investment in something that will let me do the things I really want.

It is all a.g's fault that I have forsaken film in favor of digital (but OMG it saved my ass! I was able to catch and delete the bad shots and get the shots I really wanted! Otherwise, I'd have many more pictures of people looking retarded when they were being quite eloquent.

I love love love my Fuji F30. I know that much of this is in-camera noise-reduction processing. But its low-light performance knocks the socks off our (admittedly aging) EOS 300D. It also does low-light 640x480 video that's better than my camcorder delivers. I bought it specifically to take concert photos and videos, mostly in very difficult environments. If you sit at the front of (eg) the folk club, and prop up the front of the camera on a beer mat, you can take really cracking video of the musicians. And because it's a tiny compact, the chances of your being thrown out of a 'real' concert for using it are remote.

I should add that I'd previously had a camera in the tiny Pentax Optio S range. Going to the Fuji nearly doubled the camera size (it's still pretty small though). It was a wrench giving up the true carry-anywhere nature of the Optio, but it has been absolutely worth it. Of course, a lot of people didn't like the Optio S because men with big fingers find it Too Damn Small and there were loads of control compromises to deliver the size. The Fuji F30 is quite small enough unless your calculation is "I want to take it everywhere and I'm already carrying two blackberries, a Nintendo DS and an iPod".
