I am hideously allergic to [livejournal.com profile] marnameow's beautiful cats. I had an asthma attack bad enough to go to A&E in search of Ventolin. (In civilised countries, you can buy Ventolin over the counter. In the UK, Ventolin is apparently a terrorist weapon, and attempting to buy it without a prescription will give you an authentic British Jobsworth Experience, particularly when you're actually in the process of turning a fetching shade of blue in front of them.) [livejournal.com profile] ladylilith has made me promise to give up smoking. So if I'm out and bum a cig off you, remember that it's a furtive one.

HEY [livejournal.com profile] greap! I'LL QUIT IF YOU DO!

Life with [livejournal.com profile] ladylilith is surprisingly wonderful. We're currently working out how to convince the Home Office to let her stay in the country. This will require interesting levels of commitment.

Update: My first journal entry to get enough comments to go into indexed view. Gosh!

hmm :)
JAmes is allergic to my cats. We have had to turn two rooms its Cat Free Zones otherwise he sniffles (cute, then annoying, then worrying as he goes blueish). We haven't found a good solution for this other than shaving the cats.

Cats don't like that, trust me.

And a hungry, stubble-covered cat rubbing your ankles obsessively until you pay them attention is not good for the life of your socks. Or your skin.

Luckily my cat Coco (who I would bring here if I settled, as Australia is part of the P.E.T.S scheme), as well as being a short hair is quite good about being bathed, although still requires rubber gloves and a locked room ;-)

Shades of blue

Mr H. is highly allergic to cats and dogs, so at my place he usually pops a Zyrtec. Not sure if they're prescription or not, but they seem to do the trick. He's also quite a bad asthmatic.

And on the subject of quitting smoking, Good Luck with it. I'm trying again after New Years Eve. This is it. No furtive ones for me even.

Pleased to hear everything is going so well with yourself and the lovely lady Lilith : )

They are available both on prescription and OTC. The only differences are that the OTC is sold under the brand name of Zirtek and come in packs of seven for around six quid and the prescription comes in the generic Cetirizine in packs of thirty for around six quid.

I know this because I take them as well for my copious allergies. It's good stuff; definitely better than any other allergy medication I've ever taken.

Bleargh. Trying to deal with the home office (and various international equivilents) is so tedious. We opted for the wedding route to allow [livejournal.com profile] juliann to stay in the country (though admittedly we were sort of planning that way anyway.

Personally I believe there should be a "global nomad" passport these days, for those who don't feel the need to settle down in just one country for all eternity, or for those who haven't really decided. I'll have a chat with the UN and see what they think... oh wait a minute, bush says they're irrelavent nowdays so it must be true.

If you're going the wedding route, it's important to note that it's waaay easier from the immigration point of view if you get married outside the UK.

The Home Office still have the idea that if you get married here, it's obviously a scam to keep some illegal in the country, but if you get married abroad it's valid. I was told this by the staff at the British High Commission in Toronto! My total time dealing with the High Commission after the wedding to get the residence permit was 1/2 an hour, most of that involving the clerk photocopying my paperwork.

How close is the EU to managing that "EU Passport" idea that was being tossed[sic] around a few years ago?

I am trying desperately to convince my asthma that's it's not allergic to cats - we've just got our two cats, Pilgrim and Joy and they are adorable, but my chest is starting to tighten up when I cuddle them... that would be *so* devestating. I used to have a persian when I was younger though, and that caused me no trouble...

My other half has asthma and allergies, but we don't let that stop us. Every time we get a new pet his asthma gets worse for a couple of weeks but then it settles down once his body gets used to the new levels of allergens in the house. Hope that's what's happening with you!

I would suggest that [livejournal.com profile] ladylilith withdraw all tit viewing privileges till you give up. Only way to deal with an addict is to give them a substitute addiction. Hopefully the power of the breast is mightier than the power of the nicotine monster.

Civilised countries

Pedantic epidemiologist moment:

The country with the highest incidence of deaths from asthma in the world is New Zealand. You can buy medication over the counter there, and many do because for some bizarre reason you need to pay extra to get it on prescription. The theory about the excess deaths is that patients self-medicate and use the wrong drugs/wrong doses which exacerbates the asthma. Some buy asthma drugs for the wrong reason and potentially serious illnesses go untreated.

I use diskhalers - it makes it far easier to spot when you are running low and you can get a new scrip in plenty of time. I have to use them because perversely I'm allergic to the aerosol in normal inhalers (boy, did I have fun figuring that one out!)

About the commitment thing. Since you're not British enough to count (whatever the jargon is) couldn't you both find a Brit to marry you? Passports all round. I mean, there are all these divorced goffs hanging about doing nothing useful :)

BTW, (and just to overflow that journal view a little more), Just how allergic to cats are you? Mainly considering J is also mildly allergic but has agreed rather some time ago to catsit 2 very short haired cats over xmas. She seems to not have a problem with them (as I said they're very short haired) but If you think you will have issues then we may need to re plan slightly for our boxing day do.

No, it's being in a flat with two particularly shedding cats for many hours at a time. I'm generally just fine with cats, and they certainly won't be a problem for a meal :-) (yum yum prrrr)

Boxing day should be fun - bouncing between Marna+Sean's and yours ... ALL THE CHRISTMAS YOU CAN GET!
