Now living the suburban high life in Hendon (NW4). Ten minutes' walk to the Tube, an hour's commute (door to desk) to work. Convenient to civilisation, i.e. Camden. No PC at home, hence no access to my usual email addresses, Usenet or IRC haunts for the time being.

Now to actually get my stuff shipped over from Australia ...

I need to buy a bed in fairly short order. Advice welcomed. I'm thinking queen-size futon in the first instance.

can you get railings on a futon? ;-)

Futons - if they are decently made - don't need railings :)

Have you seen the price of futons in this country? (In Canada they're dirt cheap and all students have one; over here they seem to be some sort of luxury item). Unless a futon is what you really want, I'd buy a bed straight away. There's lots of discount mattress places where you can buy a decent mattress for rock bottom prices.

Or if you've got access to a van and fancy a trip to Bristol, I have a king size mattress that needs a good home for the right price.

Hendon you say, you want to be careful you're dangerously close to Demon country there.

We've killed a couple of IKEA wooden futon frames so far - the actual futons themselves are fine though.

Our current futons which appear to be holding out quite well have come from a place local-ish to Cambridge who make some nice stuff. AFAIAA this is the place: http://www.futoncompany.co.uk/

I'm not particularly keen on futons, but if that's what you want, go for it. However, if you only want one as a temporary solution I wouldn't bother with it. Just buy the kind of bed you really want. It'll cost more in the immediate, but end up cheaper in the long-term.

No, not your mattress. It's a different one I could do with getting rid of.

At one point we had three beds in total - one double, two king size, and one of Jason's mates trying to give us *another* king size bed. We had a veritable plague of mattresses.

Railings? Well, I suppose one needs *something* to attach the straps to...

I agree with those that have said if you prefer a bed you might as well buy one now due to the cost of futons, but if you have your heart set on a futon, you might want to check out GUS. Not that I'd advocate buying anything from a subsidiary of the company that owned Reality... but, you know, it's cheap.

Futons are fine things. They just don't seem to work for people with hips, though.

Can't recall how much I paid for the last one I got in Camden, but it wasn't scary money. IIRC, the shop was on the opposite corner of the junction from the entrance to the stables market.

Your back will hate you for the first week.

some advice

"home at last". Cool. So you have a job and a place to live now. What's next? Wife and kids or something?

advice:
Go look for the mattress first, then find a fitting frame. Otherwise only (maybe severe) backache will come out of it.

A decent futon mattress can be used without a frame for some time, just lying around on the floor, so no problem there.

q:
What's "queen"-sized in real measure? 140x200 cm?
